Summer English Language Program

The Summer English Program is an intensive program required of all entering Theological School students whose first language is not English and who have not received a degree from an American university.  It is a four-credit course that comprised of a three-week course during the month of August, and a one semester course during the Fall or Spring semester, depending on when you begin.

The program combines of classroom instruction, Friday field trips to New York City, and Sunday visits to diverse worshipping communities. You will deepen your critical thinking skills and to get prepared for a successful academic and community experience. You’ll also get a taste of the rich diversity of U.S. culture and get to know one of the world’s most vibrant cities.

Sample Schedule of Classes

Mondays through Thursdays

9:30–noon Chapel Service

10:15–noon  Developmental Speaking Class
noon–1:30 p.m. Lunch

1:30–3:00 p.m. Developmental Writing Class
3:15–4:45 p.m. Writing Workshop

Examples of Field Trips

Visit to Midtown Manhattan:  New York Public Library; Bryant Park; Paley Center for Media; St. Patrick’s Cathedral; Rockefeller Center; Lunch at Midtown Location

Visit to Lower Manhattan: Train to Hoboken, NJ; Boat from Hoboken to NYC across Hudson River; Visit to 9/11 Memorial; Walking tour to include Wall Street, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Trinity Church, Museum of the American Indian; Lunch at Shake Shack

Trip to Upper Manhattan: Visit Columbus Circle; Central Park, including Strawberry Fields; Bethesda Terrace and Fountain; Alice in Wonderland; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Lunch at the Metropolitan Museum
