![#DrewTheo offers a unique opportunity for theological students, particularly those in the #MasterOfDivinity program, known as TheoTREC. With TheoTREC, students can participate in a cross-cultural learning experience through an intensive travel trip, recently visiting areas such as Istanbul, Turkiye; Seoul, South Korea; and San Francisco, California, USA.
This summer, Carrie-Lee Farnham T’26 and other students partook in the TheoTREC to England. She said, “I chose [this TheoTREC] to physically walk through the early history of Methodism - a tradition that has deeply shaped my faith and vocational call.”
As Carrie-Lee completes the Master of Divinity in United Methodist Ministry in the next year, she will take her experiences beyond the worldwide classroom into her academic and ministry work. In the first photo, she is pictured in the New Room - a chapel near Bristol - standing where John Wesley would have stood in a moment that she called “incredibly powerful and humbling.”
Next, the group visited the Wesleys’ family home where John and his brother Charles were raised. John was the founder of Methodism, and Charles was a hymn writer and minister who followed in his older brother’s footsteps. In the last photo, the group is in the chapel beneath the House of Parliament. This was “a meaningful shared moment beneath one of the most iconic political buildings in the world,” Carrie-Lee said.
The TheoTREC was led by Rev. Dr. Kevin Newburg, Associate Teaching Professor in the History of Christianity and Methodist Studies. Dr. Art Pressley, Associate Professor of Psychology and Religion, also joined the travelers.
In reflecting on her experience in England, Carrie-Lee said, “This journey not only deepened my theological understanding but also grounded my future ministry in the legacy and spirit of the Wesleyan movement. The fact that it was in a country I’ve always longed to visit was a definite bonus!”
