There are two ways to place into the appropriate college writing section.  Please select the scenario (A or B) that applies to your situation and follow the instructions.  We have designed this placement system to ensure that you are in the class that will both challenge you and help you develop the new skills necessary to become a successful college writer.

Scenario A: You Submitted SAT Scores to Drew

If we received your SAT Writing scores, please register for College Writing based on the following writing score breakdown:

  • If your SAT Writing score is between 200-490, you should register for WRTG 102
  • If your SAT Writing score is between 500-650, you should register for WRTG 103
  • If your SAT Writing score is between 660-800, you should register for WRTG 104

Review the descriptions of the College Writing courses. If you feel that you have been placed in the right course, you are finished with the writing placement process.  You can register for the appropriate course during the registration period.

If, based on the course descriptions above, you feel that you have not been placed in the best writing class for you, you can challenge your placement by taking the Writing Placement Test.

No challenges to initial placements will be honored after the July 25th deadline. You will be notified by e-mail of the results of your challenge within 10 days of submitting the test, and, if a change in course is indicated, you will be able to change your registration appropriately. Decisions by the Director and/or the Co-Assistant Directors of Writing about challenges are final (i.e. you are only allowed one challenge).

Scenario B: You Did Not Submit SAT Scores to Drew

If you did not submit SAT scores to Drew, you must take the Writing Placement Test. Once you complete this assessment, you will be notified, by email, within 10 days of submitting your test about your placement.  You can then register for the appropriate WRTG course during the registration period.  Once you have completed the placement test, you are finished with the writing placement process.  There is no challenge procedure for Scenario B as you will be able to provide all the information necessary to make an accurate placement on the Writing Placement Test.
