Think about your career objectives and goals:
- What type of work do you want to do after graduation?
- Do you need a graduate program to prepare you for this work? If so, what type of program?
- What are you looking for in a graduate program that will help you achieve your objectives?
- Do you still enjoy school and studying? Would you like to have more in-depth knowledge about your field?
- Is graduate school YOUR idea? Are you being overly influenced by family, professors, or friends or avoiding all the hassles of a job search?
Think about who you are and what you are like as a student:
- Do you enjoy writing, research, having intellectual discussions and arguing about ideas?
- Are you bright, hardworking, attentive to detail, creative, and organized?
- Are you determined, persistent and self-motivated?
- How do you honestly rate yourself as a student? Are you in the top 5%, 10%, or 15% of your class?
As a graduate student, you will be required to:
- Attend classes
- Do extensive reading and writing
- Make presentations in class and/or teaching courses
- Work closely with faculty and other students
- Engage in a variety of research activities
- Gain related work experience
During the application process, you’ll need to think about:
- your motivation
- your personal characteristics
- your goals and career objectives
- your intellectual abilities
The more you know yourself and the more you understand what you want from the graduate school experience, the easier it will be to identify programs that are right for you!
