Have an Out-of-the-Classroom Experience.

Out of the Classroom Experience

Live What You Learn

At Drew, hands-on experience is a must-have, not a nice-to-have. You’ll live what you learn in one of the university’s New York City programs, through its out-of-classroom requirements, hundreds of internship opportunities and numerous study abroad offerings.

Research Institute for Scientists Emeriti (RISE)

Through this one-of-a-kind program, Drew science students do hands-on research on real-world problems, guided by industry experts. They work closely with star researchers, including a Nobel Prize winner and many with dozens of patents to their names.

Drew Summer Science Institute (DSSI)

Students receive stipends to work intensively during the summers with faculty researchers. They present their work at conferences and publish their findings in academic journals.

PhD programs in the sciences require prior research experience. Most students need to take time off between undergraduate and graduate school to do it, but through the RISE program at Drew, I did years of research work and was able to publish two scholarly papers—before even earning my bachelor’s degree. ”

Semesters in the City

Built into a Drew education—our majors, our mentoring, our location and our history—are multiple New York City semesters that focus on professional worlds: Wall Street, contemporary art, media, social entrepreneurship, theatre and politics and diplomacy. Other city programs take you to Washington, D.C., London and more.

Study Abroad

Our faculty design special research and study experiences—unique to Drew—for our students to get immersed in abroad.

Community-Based Learning Classes

Drew's Center for Civic Engagement offers classes that allow you to connect academic learning with action at off-campus community organizations. There, you'll serve the common good by addressing a community need or strengthening a community capacity.
