Bring With You:
Materials that have helped to understand and work on your assignment. First drafts, brainstorming and class notes, the assignment prompt, and central readings can help you help our tutors understand your writing situation. These may be printed or still on the computer;we can use both.
Early drafts, or no draft at all! A session with a writing specialist can be helpful at any stage of the process. It may be useful to stop in even if all you have are questions!
An open mind, flexibility, and energy. The most effective sessions are those in which YOU are an active participant. Our staff of helpful readers understand how challenging assignments, getting feedback on your writing, and living up to your professor’s expectations can be! We can listen to you talk about your experiences as a writer and help you to develop strategies for more effective writing.
Other Things to Keep in Mind:
Be on Time! If you are more than ten minutes late to your session and have not called us, we will give your slot to another waiting student.
Book early! Leave yourself time to make changes to your work. Since our tutors will help you think through issues with your writing, you will want enough time after your session to process what you talked about.
You are ultimately the one who decides what changes to make to your text. So be sure to allow yourself time between your Writing Center appointment and your writing project’s due date to think through the feedback you received and to make the changes and revisions that you have decided are necessary.
