Religion, Violence, and Peace-making
S. Wesley Ariarajah, Professor of Ecumenical Theology
Do religious traditions contribute to the rise of violence in societies? Are some religions more likely to instigate violence than others, and if so, why? What is the role of religions in militancy and terrorism? These have become important questions especially because religions in our day has entered the public square and play an important role in social, ethical and political debates. This seminar seeks to examine these issues by looking at the nature and purpose of religious traditions and the role they had played in shaping the life of societies in the past and in our day. It would also ask the important question whether religions have the potential for peace-making and could be called upon to intervene in situations of conflict and violence. The seminar will be based on case studies of places where religions are believed to have played significant roles in either fermenting conflict or in bring about peace and reconciliation.
