Hello PREP Participants!!

Congratulations on enrolling in one of the most transformative educational experiences you will have during your time at Drew!

Below please find the general information and requirements you will need to be able to participate in PREP:

Initial Interview

Before you can officially register as a PREP student, a 15 minute interview w/ the PREP Coordinator is required. The purpose of the interview is to provide some background information for PREP and to make sure that you and the PREP project are a good match. Please email one of the Coordinators your contact information so that the interview can be set-up: Arminta Fox, afox1@drew.edu or Charon Hribar, charonatdrew@gmail.com.

Courses at the Prison

PREP courses are held on Mondays in the late afternoon and evenings. At Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women (Clinton, NJ), the courses will run from 3:30-6:30pm. At Northern State Prison for men (Newark, NJ), the courses will run from 5:00-8:30pm. All specific course information and syllabi will be provided by the facilitating faculty member.

N.J.D.O.C. Forms

It is vitally important to fill these out and make sure the Coordinator receives them AT LEAST ONE MONTH PRIOR TO THE SCHEDULED PRISON ORIENTATION. It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to complete this paperwork—you will not be allowed into the facilities until the paperwork has been processed which can take several weeks. Alma Tuitt has copies at her desk, but you can also get the forms online, fill them out, sign them, and send them to the address below ASAP.

Here are the links to the forms:

Some Tips from DOC when filling out the forms:

  • Name should include maiden names or any other aliases
  • If not born in the US, proof of citizenship or visas should be attached
  • Under name of org, please state whether professor or student w/ Drew University
  • Type of service: volunteer drew prof or student
  • “New” applicants not “renewal”
  • Sign pg 2 of app and clearance and sign both copies of the rules/regs form
  • ***don’t leave any blank spaces or your app cannot be processed. If a question does not pertain, write n/a on that line.***

Please send them to:

Drew Training (on campus)

Before you go into the prisons for their orientation, there will be a required Saturday training—usually from 10-2pm at Seminary Hall. This training is facilitated by the Coordinator and an alum from PREP. It is mandatory that you attend and the date will be given to you at the time of your interview.

Prison Facility Orientation

In addition, the prisons require you to participate in a volunteer orientation before you can be admitted in the facility. This orientation will be scheduled at least a week before you start your first class.

Transportation

EMCFW is in Clinton, NJ (approx. 40 minutes away by car). It is located off of exit 15 from 78W. Northern is in Newark, NJ next to the Newark airport (approx. 35 minutes away by car). It is located off of exit 58B from 78E (local lanes toward the airport). Directions to both facilities can also be found on the DOC website. In the past, most students have arranged carpools to the facilities.

Please don’t hesitate to call or email with any further questions, comments, or concerns. I look forward to talking with you and walking along side of you as you experience PREP!

Shalom,
