New Drew Certificate: Ministry of the City

Are you passionate about ministering within urban centers, partnering with communities toward their fullest potential?  Or, do you see the distinctive dimensions of life in the city as ways into the Gospel’s vision of communal creaturely life?

These questions invite alumni, clergy, laity, and seminarians to enroll in Drew Theological School’s latest professional certification program, Ministry of the City.  To be launched in Fall 2012, it will academically, culturally and practically prepare individuals to engage in ministry in urban environments via a non-degree format. It will explore the city in the Bible and its role in congregations and communities, reviewing theological concepts in community organizing, raising cultural awareness and sensitivity, and providing field experience in various urban settings. This program aligns with GBHEM’s Urban Ministry Certification for United Methodist Students, yet will offer the opportunity for people of all denominations to participate. The five core areas are:

  • Engaging the Bible in the City
  • Practical Theology and Ministry of the City
  • The City as Community
  • Congregations and Communities as Partners in Ministry of the City
  • United Methodist Studies (required for UM students)

Certification courses are offered in a variety of formats: some on-line, some on-campus intensives, and others in traditional semester-based class format. Courses will be offered in a rotation to allow for completion of the certification in a two-year period.

Drew Theological School will educate participants to not only respond to changes within our cities, but also to prepare for them.  With the migration of people back to the cities, and the every-changing diversity and ongoing needs within these communities, Ministry of the City will provide the needed preparation for this relevant, crucial, and exciting area of ministry.
