New Drew Student Earns Four Scholarships

Geisel Dieguez C’22, child of immigrants, will double-major in political science and economics.

June 2018 – Incoming Drew University student Geisel Dieguez, who’s from Coral Gables, Fla., earned scholarships from the Coral Gables Community Foundation, Ortega Foundation, Miami Bayside Foundation and Kiwanis Club of Coral Gables.

A graduate of Coral Gables Senior High School, Dieguez C’22 hopes to major in political science and economics at Drew. He said he was attracted to university’s academic and internship opportunities and its small size, which allows professors and staffers to work closely with students.

“I prefer that kind of laser-focused attention on the students,” said Dieguez. For example, he said that Chris Teare, senior associate director of admissions, shared his cell phone number in case he had any questions.

Dieguez is the son of immigrants. His mother, who works in the health insurance industry, is from Ecuador, and his father, who is disabled as the result of an accident, is from Cuba.

Currently, Dieguez is secretary of the Miami-Dade Teen Democrats and his ultimate goal is to serve in elected office, possibly as a U.S. Senator.
