Avenue by defeating the College of St. Elizabeth’s, 63-48, in the opening round
of the Ramapo Tip-Off Tournament. The
Rangers built an insurmountable 30 point lead early in the second half thanks
to 62.5% shooting in the first period. Danielle
Barber led all scorers with 18 points and handed out nine assists while the
Rangers got career-highs from Eden Blazovic and Rebecca Smith. Drew improves to 3-0 on the season with wins
over Madison/Convent Station rivals FDU and St. Elizabeth’s.

A first half of torrid shooting helped Drew build the 16
point lead at the break. Drew trailed by
a point after four minutes of play when the Eagles’ Sabrina Jarmolinski knocked
down a jumper at the 16 minute mark, 9-8.
The Rangers then reeled off a 13-3 run to build an 11 point lead. After Barber’s jumper made it 10-9, Blazovic
scored the Rangers’ next three baskets for a 16-11 lead. Consecutive jumpers by Barber made it 20-11
before the sophomore guard set up Olsen for the 11 point, 22-11, lead at 10:39.

Barber knocked down a jumper with just fewer than ten
minutes remaining to counter Maesoon Deeb’s free throws. A three from Barber made it 27-13 before
Jessica DelVecchio took over the scoring load for the Rangers. The senior had already drilled a pair of
threes when Kat Luby found her open with 7:24 left in the half. JDV knocked down that triple and then
followed up with a jumper a few minutes later to break a short drought by the
Rangers as Drew built a 32-19 lead.

The final five minutes of the half were foul plagued as ten
of the final 15 points were from the foul line.
The Rangers got the better end of that deal, 9-4, with Ashley Logan
scoring her first points of the season after losing much of last year to
injury. Barber, DelVecchio and Blazovic
were the biggest contributors in the first half. Barber finished the period with 12 points,
five boards and seven assists.
DelVecchio, one of the best shooters in the Landmark Conference, found
her stroke while hitting 4-5 from the field and 3-4 from behind the arc. Blazovic had eight points in nine minutes.

Drew’s lead grew to 30 points as the Rangers opened the
second half with a 14-0 run. Four points
from Barber and Smith in the run helped give Drew a 53-25 advantage with 14:30
left in the game. Smith’s jumper with 12
minutes left made it a 31 point game, 60-29.

In a meet full of Ranger wins, the most important was the
men’s team victory over Mount Saint Mary’s 101-73 on Friday night. The Rangers won 15 of the 22 events, but were
forced to swallow a tough loss on the women’s side as Mt. St. Mary’s superior numbers
helped the visitors squeeze out a 93-87 win.
John Feniello, Kati Eggert and Jeroen Fabricant each won two events in
the meet.

The Ranger women’s medley team got the meet started in
exciting fashion. The Rangers were
trailing by half of a body length when senior Selena Davis entered the pool as
the free and final leg of the relay.
Davis caught the Blue Knight anchor leg mid-way through the first lap
and pulled away with 10 meters left in the home stretch to touch first by less
than one second thanks to her 25.55 leg.

Drew’s men’s relay team was able to grab all 11 points as
well, mostly because they were unopposed in the 200 Medley Relay. As Drew’s men’s team was searching for its
first win in three seasons, every point was welcome.

The Rangers picked up nine more points thanks to Jeroen
Fabricant’s strong 1000 Free performance.
Fabricant passed Brian Heitman around the 28th lap in the
1000 Free before building a four second lead by the 33rd lap. By the bell lap, Fabricant had taken a
commanding lead before winning with an 11:28.10, nearly seven seconds ahead of Heitman.

Davis picked up another win with a strong second 100 in the
women’s 200 Free. Trailing after two
laps, Davis cruised by the Blue Knight in front of her to win pulling away with
a time of 2:09.72.

John Feniello followed Davis’ lead in the men’s 200
Free. The junior trailed for much of the
race in his lane three to Ryan Carroll in lane two. With just one and a half laps left, Feniello
still remained half of a body length back, but caught his opponent by the end
wall and pulled away in the final 15 yards to touch at 1:58.51, a full second
ahead of his opponent. The time is
Feniello’s PR and cracks Drew’s All-Time Top 10 in the event.

Kati Eggert continued the win parade for the Rangers by
leading a one-two sweep and crushing her 50 Free event. The junior swam a 26.90, her best time of the
season for the win. Katie Lyons took
second place with a 29.17, though the Blue Knights were able to pick up six
points in the event with the final three finishers. In the men’s 50 Free, Walter Bakun used a
powerful second 25 to take the race in 24.17, breaking his season-best time and
recording the Rangers’ best time in three seasons.

The Blue Knights won the next two women’s events to pull
closer to the Rangers in the overall score as Brianna Perazella won the 200 IM
and Jamie Testa won the 100 Fly. The MSM
men’s team won those same events through Enrique Naudy in both races, though
Ulysses Baldwin-Beneich swam the first sub-1:00 100 Fly in the past three
seasons at Drew.

Eggert picked up her second win of the meet in the 100 Free;
again, the junior led the whole way while posting a time of 1:00.59. Though well off her Drew best of 57.77,
Eggert’s quality early season form bodes well for better results down the line.

Feniello was the next Ranger to pick up a second win. The junior captain took the lead in the third
lap before pulling away in the final 50 yards to post a personal best of 53.45. Feniello picked up 21 points in three events
with a three place showing in the 100 Back event that immediately followed this
impressive 100 Free.

First-year Lindsay Root put in a fine performance in the 100
Back to win another race for the Rangers.
Fresh off the soccer field, Root led for most of the race while posting
a 1:07.39. Sofia Quintanar took third
place for the Rangers, but the Blue Knights were able to collect three extra
points at the back end of the race to remain within striking distance of the
smaller Rangers squad.

In the men’s 100 Back, Bakun held on to win with a couple of
desperate strokes right at the end. He
and MSM’s Carroll were very tight throughout the race with Bakun taking a small
lead during the final two laps. Carroll
closed the gap and looked poise to pass Bakun before a few long reaching
strokes got the Ranger the touch by less than one second.

The meet continued to go well for the Rangers, but Drew’s
women’s team was in trouble as the Blue Knights racked up points in the bottom
part of the placements. Perazella won
her second race for MSM with a terrific 5:31.48 500 Free, though Root and
Jasmine Prokscha took second and third in the event. Naudy won the 500 Free for the guests as
well.

Though now looking at long odds to win the meet, the Rangers
kept battling. In the 100 Breaststroke,
Jasmine Prokscha and Sofia Quinatanar took first and second, respectively, with
Katie Lyons placing fourth in her first attempt at the 100 Breaststroke at
Drew. Fabricant and Baldwin-Beneich
repeated the feat in the men’s race by sweeping the top two spots while Jacob
Grossman took fourth place.

At this point in the meet, the Rangers were leading by five
points, 87-82, but all of their swimmers had swam in the maximum of four events
so Drew was unable to place with its 200 Free Relay team. Of course, the Rangers’ foursome easily won
the event as an exhibition team with a time of 1:52.80 as three swimmers –
Davis, Root and Eggert – each put in legs in the 27 second range. The Blue Knights took all 11 points to win
the meet 93-87.

On the other hand, the men’s team didn’t even need a point
from the 200 Free Relay to win its first meet in more than two full seasons,
101-73. In all, the Rangers won 15 of the
22 events with the women taking seven of the 11 races and the men winning eight
of 11.

The Rangers get back in the pool on Saturday afternoon in
the rescheduled meet at Drew against Lebanon Valley College at 1 pm.

Drew vs. Mt. St. Mary's

Drew University’s Equestrian Team had another successful show, placing third overall at an All-Region Show held at Centenary College on Sunday. Two Blue Ribbons, from Jonas Colmer and Christine Karas, were the highlights though five second-place showings were imperative to the team’s overall placement. The Rangers finished just a single point behind the second place team while collecting 37 points, the team’s high for the season.

Sarah Colmer, Katie Kramer (twice), Mollie McGann and Anjelica Veca all grabbed reserve champion honors. Veca’s strong performance qualified her for the regional championships, the sixth Ranger to meet the standard this season. Kramer’s two second-place ribbons kept her in second place in the regional Cacchione Cup standings.

The Rangers had 23 riders earn points, a season high. In the Open and Intermediate Fences classes, the Riding Rangers did particularly well. Katie Kramer, Sarah Barbato and Rachel Denning took third through fifth place, respectively, in Open Fences with Haley Flagg earning reserve honors. Sarah Colmer and Ashley Kraft placed second and third in Intermediate Fences. Colmer has placed in the Top 3 of the Intermediate Fences class in five of six shows this season.
Kramer placed second in Open Flat as well, tying with teammate Mollie McGann. McGann has come on strong as the fall season draws near a close; the first-year has been fourth, second and second in her last three shows in Open Flat.

Jonas Colmer grabbed the Rangers’ first Blue Ribbon of the day with a great ride in Novice Fences. Colmer had been second twice this season before winning his first Blue Ribbon at this show.

Christina Karas earned Drew’s second Blue Ribbon in Advanced Walk Trot Canter. It was also her second of the season.
In the Alumni classes, Kristine Kennedy C’06 won the Flat class and placed second in Fences.

The Rangers will look to improve upon their fourth place standing in the region as they compete in two shows this coming weekend.

Drew University Equestrian Team
Horse Show Results
November 15, 2009

Hosted by: Marist College
Location: Crosswinds Equestrian Center

Open Equitation over Fences
Katie Kramer - 2nd - Shamrock
Rachel Denning - 4th - Loddie
Haley Flagg - Reserve - Bonnie
Sarah Barbato - 3rd - Smudge

Intermediate Equitation over Fences
Sarah Colmer - 2nd - Smudge
Ashley Kraft - 3rd - Oliver
Emma Richard - 5th - Stanley

Open Equitation on the Flat
Rachel Denning - 6th - Smudge
Katie Kramer - 2nd - Tucker
Mollie McGann - 2nd - Loddie

Intermediate Equitation on the Flat
Sarah Colmer - 4th - Oliver

Novice Equitation over Fences
Jonas Colmer - 1st - Impy
Leanne Horinko - 6th - Mikey

Advanced Walk Trot Canter Equitation
Kaitlyn Bennett - 5th - Roosevelt
Christina Karas - 1st - Stewart

Beginner Walk Trot Canter Equitation
Alexa Lynskey - 4th - Impy

Walk Trot Equitation
Emma Rose Chemidlin - 6th - Eva
Anjelica Veca - 2nd - Paint

Novice Equitation on the Flat
Kara Pennino - 4th - Hawk
Meg Dunne - 3rd - Patch
Anne Daniels - 4th - Stewart

Alumni Equitation on the Flat
Kristine Kennedy - 1st - Loddie

Alumni Equitation over Fences
Kristine Kenney - 2nd - Eva

Blue Ribbon Count: 18

Regional Qualifiers – 6 - Ellen Joyce (Novice Fences), Haley Flagg (Intermediate Flat), Sara Lovett (Walk Trot Canter), Sean Ireland (Walk Trot), Ashley Kraft (Intermediate Flat), Anjelica Veca (Walk Trot)

The Riding Rangers are currently
4th Place in the Region for '09-'10

In one of the best college basketball games ever played in
Baldwin Gym, Drew men’s hoops beat FDU in overtime, 77-72. Terrell Brown sent the game into OT with a
driving layup in the final ten seconds of regulation and then scored four
points in the extra period to lead the Rangers to a win in the Battle of
Madison Avenue in front of a standing room only crowd at Drew. FDU fought back from 12 down in the second
half to put Drew on the brink before the Rangers came through in the clutch to give Head Coach Darryl Keckler the biggest win of his young career. Brown finished with 19 points and nine
rebounds while Ricky Fetske led all players with 25 points and 15 boards.

The game started with both teams throwing proverbial jabs
with neither taking a commanding advantage.
Dylan Bulger gave Drew an early lead with a pair of pretty jump hooks,
but the Devils and Fetske, in particular, got the Ranger big man in foul
trouble. The game was tied up for fourth
time at the 11:30 mark when Mehmet Onen found Pat Dorsey for a cutting layup,
10-10.

A few minutes later McNeil Wrice and Kyle Joyce hit back to back
threes to rally Drew from a basket down and build a four point lead. That advantage would grow to 11 fast break
buckets from Mike Mayes and Brown, threes from Onen and Wrice and a layup from
Tony Ganter off Mayes’ nice feed.
FDU finished the half strong as Andrew Biancosino scored seven points in the
final two minutes of play. Brown’s tip
in as time expired gave Drew a 33-25 lead at the half.

The second half was full of twists and turns as Drew twice
built what looked like commanding leads only to see the Devils battle
back. Bulger’s free throw gave Drew a
ten point lead just seconds into the half, but after five minutes of play in
the second FDU was within one point. The
Devils went on a 13-4 run with only Mike Mayes putting up points for Drew. Fetske was becoming a handful, but it was
also FDU’s point guard Adam Katz doing damage for the guests.

Bobby Faiges’ three pointer with 13:16 left again made it a
one point game before Drew went on a 12-3 run sparked by Mayes. A Terrell Brown tip-in made it 44-41 before
Mayes scored seven of Drew’s next ten points and had a sweet no-look assist on
Kyle Joyce’s fast break layup. That 11
point 54-43 lead would eventually reach 12 at 58-46 with 6:45 left in the
half. The Devils’ second rally came on
at that point. A jumper by Fetske and a
fast break layup by Martin Johnson made it an eight point Drew lead before
Biancosino’s three point play made it five, 58-53, with 5:35 left. A layup by Nnamdi Ekezie and free throws from
Brown countered a jumper from Fetske as the Rangers held a seven point edge
into the final four minutes.

That lead was quickly erased by FDU. Buckets from Faiges and Fetske made it three
before Kate hit a free throw with 2:52 left to make it two points. Katz’s heads up play to steal the ball as the
Rangers tried to call time out led to Fetske’s game tying dunk with 2:40
left.
Off the in-bound, Brown found Mayes for a tough layup in traffic, but Fetske
again countered to tie the game for the sixth time.

In the final minute of play, Faiges’ baseline drive drew the
Ranger defense off Fetske who easily put in the go ahead layup with under a
minute to play, right in front of the Drew Zoo outrageous student section on
the baseline.

With 33 seconds left, Drew had the ball and got it into
Bulger in the middle. The freshman could
get hit jumper to fall, but Kyle Joyce was first to the rebound and saved the
possession for Drew. After a timeout,
the Rangers swung the ball out to Brown on the right side of the court. The sophomore beat his man off the dribble,
but had his drive closed down by Fetske.
Brown banked it high off the glass and in with 11 seconds left to tie
the game at 66-66. FDU had a final
chance, but the long three was off the mark.

Bulger again scored the first points of the period in
overtime with a jumper. After Drew
forced a bad shot, Mayes found Tony Ganter alone in the corner. The sophomore hit nothing but net for a 71-66
lead. Back at the other end, Johnson hit
a driving layup to bring it back to three.
Head Coach Darryl Keckler is now in his second year with the Rangers and
perhaps that extra bit of experience helped him out today. The Rangers were deadly after coming back
from timeouts in today’s game, scoring off inbound plays in four of six
tries. This time a long outlet to Mayes
led to Joyce feeding Brown for a fast break layup.

That five point lead didn’t last long though as Katz hit a pair of free throws and
then Johnson scored on a breakaway layup.
Up by just one with 1:20 left, Brown and Bulger again came up big. Bulger grabbed a defensive rebound in traffic
and then made a great pass from the top of the key to a cutting Brown for a
layup. That hoop would prove the
decisive one as the Devils were unable to come back for once in the game. Mayes hit a pair of free throws down the
stretch – though the Rangers had eight foul shots in the final minute0 – to ice
the game for the Rangers as the Drew Zoo sang long and enthusiastic versions of
“Na-na-na-na Hey Hey Hey Goodbye” and “We Own Madison”.

Mayes finished with 17 points, ten boards and seven assists
while Bulger made the most of his 15 minutes with ten points, six boards and
two blocks. Ganter’s solid 37 minutes
included seven points, three boards and three assists. Four Devils reached double figures in the
loss. Biancosino had 14 and 10 while
Faiges and Katz had 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Rangers will look to put in a similar effort when they
travel to take on Rosemont College on Saturday.
The Battle of Mad Ave lived up to its name as Drew’s women’s
basketball fought to a thrilling 51-46 win over the FDU Devils in Baldwin Gym
on Wednesday night. Danielle Barber made
a number of big plays down the stretch as the Rangers held off a late surge by
the visiting Devils. Drew’s defense and
Jess DelVecchio, in particular, did a great job shutting down FDU’s top scorer,
Danielle Michlovsky, to pull out the huge non-conference win. The Rangers are now 2-0 on the season.

The first half ended at 28-22 despite the Rangers holding an
11 point lead during the period. Neither
team shot the ball well at the beginning of the game as it took the Rangers
nearly six minutes to build a 10-6 lead. Drew got to that advantage from a three by
DelVecchio off a Barber assist and then a reverse of that connection with
Barber drilling off DelVecchio’s feed.

A short 7-1 spurt by the Rangers in the middle of the half
gave Drew a 24-13 lead. Two low-post
newcomers, Britta Olsen and Rebecca Smith, helped out in the run with
buckets. FDU would cut that lead to
26-21 within minutes as Courtney Young knocked down a pair of jumpers and
Meghan Lentine scored off Young’s assist with 2:19 left in the half. After an Olsen bucket, Michlovsky’s free
throw was the half’s final tally.

The second half began with a barren spell from both squads
before the game found its pace and turned into the intense, physical encounter
that one would expect for the rivalry. DelVecchio
sparked the Rangers’ first run of the half with a steal and a three on the
ensuing possession. Eden Blazovic then
showed the talent that made her such a key recruit in the offseason. The forward grabbed an offensive rebound and
then knocked down a jumper for a 33-23 lead.
The first-year then proved that she can run the court as well as any
post player in the Ranger program for a few years; she stole the ball at one
end and was then on the receiving end of a slick pass from Barber for a fast
break layup just moments later. That
hoop by Blazovic gave Drew a 12 point, 35-23, lead, the largest of the game.

The Devils called a timeout and regrouped well. Seven straight points from Shealyn Taggart
cut the lead to six points with 12:17 left in the game. FDU would cut it to two points on a Shannon
Smith free throw four minutes later before Barber would drag the Rangers back
to an eight point advantage. The
sophomore hit a pair of free throws to make it 39-35 with 7:10 left. On FDU’s next possession, she grabbed a
defensive rebound and then started a fast break which finished with her setting
up Jessica Reid with a nice look. After
a Taggart hoop, Barber found Reid again for a layup. With four minutes left, Barber did it herself
with a steal and breakaway layup for a 45-37 score.

The key to the game by this point had been DelVecchio’s incredible
defensive effort on Michlovsky. The
senior forward had been averaging 21 points per game this season, but JDV had
frustrated the FDU star to the point of exasperation and forcing her into bad
turnovers. FDU’s supporting cast had to
make some plays again to pull the lead back down to four points with under
three minutes to play. Shannon Smith
converted a layup before Courtney Young old-school three-pointer made it
45-42. Michlovsky then scored her only
points from the field in the entire game with a jumper at the 2:51 to counter
DelVecchio’s free throw at the other end.

The score remained 46-44 into the final 90 seconds of the
game when Barber again came up big. She
knocked down a jumper off JDV’s assist to bring the score to 48-44, but Michlovsky
made one of two free throws to make it a one possession game again.

The Rangers made it tough on their fans in the final minute
of play. Back-to-back turnovers gave the
Devils two chances to tie up, but both times the Ranger defense shut them
down. With 21 seconds left, Barber
stripped Young, but was then stripped by Smith.
Smith hit one of two and the Devils now trailed by just two, 48-46. Back at the other end Barber drew a foul to
get to the line with 15 seconds left.
She hit one of two as well, but once again the Rangers’ D forced the
Devils into a rushed three pointer that Barber rebounded. This time, she hit both of her free throws
and the Rangers ran out the time on a 51-46 victory.

The Rangers have so many positives to take away from the
game besides simply a tough win over a fierce rival. Drew shot just 29.5% on the day and hit just
5-17 three pointers. The Rangers won
just one game last season when they shot that poorly from the field, but they
showed that they will have the variety of offensive weapons to compete even
when cold from the floor this season.
The Rangers got 20 points and 20 rebounds combined from Blazovic, Reid,
Smith and Olsen in day’s win to help overcome an off day from reigning Landmark
Player of the Week Kat Luby. Certainly,
another huge game from Barber (18 pts, six rebounds, six assists and four
steals) helped. Drew did get out
rebounded again, but by forcing 23 turnovers it was able to overcome the
opponent’s second chances.

DelVecchio finished with 13 points and Reid had eight. Young led the Devils with 14 points while
Taggart came on strong in the second half to finish with 11. Michlovsky had seven points and ten boards.

The Rangers will look to improved to 3-0 on Friday when they
go for the Madison/Florham/Convent Station sweep in a match up with St.
Elizabeth’s at the Ramapo Tournament.
But, they can already claim to be Champions of Madison Avenue for at
least one year.

Newspaper Box Score
FDUW0910 vs Drew Rangers
11/18/09 6:00 at Baldwin Gym
At Baldwin Gym
DREW RANGERS 51, FDUW0910 46
FDUW0910 (1-2)

Courtney Young 6-15 1-1 14; Shealyn Taggart 4-18 2-2 11;

She scored 17 of her 20 points in the second half as the Rangers extended a 10-point halftime edge to as many as 23 and she matched the Landmark single-game record with six three pointers. She was 6-of-12 from three-point distance, and 7-of-15 from the field in the game, while also grabbing four rebounds, collecting two steals, and adding an assist.

have had more had David Brigandi not been so effective in goal for the Rangers. The senior, a Second Team All-Landmark
Conference selection this season, made six saves before the 65th
minute when the game changed. A
red card issued to a Stockton player gave Drew the impetus to attack with more

<![endif]-->Drew swimming opened its 2009-10 season against the Ramapo
Roadrunners at the Kirby Pool on Saturday. Despite losing both matches, the Rangers had a number of
strong individual performances, as the large Class of ’13 got wet for the first
time as collegians. Senior Selena
Davis produced the highlight by cruising to the win in the 100 Backstroke. Equally important, the Rangers posted a
handful of times that would have been top marks last season in just this first
meet. The overall scores prove the
quality and depth of the Roadrunners rather than the efforts of the Rangers;
Ramapo’s men won 169-32 and women won 146-26.

The meet started promisingly, but also foreshadowed the

favored Ramapo in both races as the Roadrunners took the 11 points each time. Head Coach Eric Scheingoltz is
optimistic about the men’s 200 Medley Team’s potential and it is easy to see
why with Bakun leading off and Alex Braunstein anchoring the relay with a 24.46

’08-09, but it wasn’t even the best of the race today. Berube’s classmate Uly Baldwin-Beneich touched

Greylock Regional High School. The time surpassed his previous best by nearly 20 seconds, even though it was set just a week ago at the Landmark Conference Championships. The great performance caps an outstanding rookie season for the transfer student. He came oh-so-close to winning the Brooklyn Invitational earlier in the year, was named the Landmark’s Runner of the Week in October and earned the highest place for a Drew runner in the history of the LC Championships.

If not for Monteleone’s arrival, freshman Zack Mower would have been able to claim nearly all of those honors. After posting one of the best freshman seasons in a long time for the Cross Country program, Mower was able to culminate his campaign with a personal best of 29:21.4, a full 12 seconds faster than his time at the Landmark’s last week and nearly a full minute faster than his time at the season opening meet. Mower just missed out on a Top 100 placement, taking 103rd overall.

Junior Andrew Ehlert placed third of the Rangers and 198th overall, just ahead of freshman Maxwell Rich in 200th. Rich was another of the Rangers to post a PR as he cut 20 seconds off his previous record, again set just a week ago.
The Rangers fifth place finisher was another freshman, Tim Barnum. Barnum took 211th with a time of 32:00.7, just under ten seconds faster than his time at the Landmark’s last week, another PR and 1:48 faster than his time at the season-opener.

Finally, senior Greg Del Russo closed out his gutsy career with a PR. The senior has battled through some though seasons during his four years on the Ranger squad to become a captain this year. He finished off his career in style, missing his PR set last season by just three tenths of a second at 33:00.4.

27. 779 Drew (30:33.3 152:46.5)
1 67 Steve Monteleone SO 28:32.9
2 103 Zack Mower FR 29:21.4
3 198 Andrew Ehlert JR 31:23.8
4 200 Maxwell Rich FR 31:27.7
5 211 Tim Barnum FR 32:00.7
6 (234) Greg Del Russo SR 33:00.4
