Director of Residence Life and Housing

The Office of Residence Life is comprised of various professional positions that allow our resident students to thrive in their living environment.  The majority of our staff is live-in professionals who dedicate countless hours to make sure the Residential Campus is maintained in a phenomenal working condition.  We value our resident students and stride to build and maintain personal and professional relationships.The Director of Residence Life and Housing provides a mission for the department, while liaison with other university offices for the success of the university’s mission. This demands skills in supervision, negotiation, compromise, an understanding of student development and organizational psychology. The position of the Director demands constant and consistent communication between the staff of the Residence Life Office and faculty/staff in other areas.  The Director’s participation in the Student Affairs staff meetings will assist in this communication, as well as continued professional development and a clear understanding of the university’s mission.

As a conduct officer, the Director sets an example that supports the university’s standards, as well as the developmental needs of the student body and professional support of the residential staff. By understanding the university’s standards, the Director can create a foundation from which the staff can work. Creating consistency with the Associate Dean for Student Life will be vital in making the judicial process both educational and effective.

Staff Training, Selection and Development entail long range planning, the application of professional skills and knowledge, and the coordination of numerous groups, resources and individuals to prepare staff members to be a resource to the residents with whom they work.

As the Chief Officer of Residence Life, the Director negotiates the needs of the administration with those of his/her staff, and advocate for her/his staff to other members of the administration. Working to create positive relationships with other members of the faculty and staff will assist this process.

Residence Life Administrators

The Office of Residence Life is comprised of various professional positions that allow our
resident students to thrive in their living environment.  The majority of our staff is live-in professionals who dedicate countless hours to make sure the Residential Campus is maintained in a phenomenal working condition. We value our resident students and stride to build and maintain personal and professional relationships.  The Coordinator of Residential Engagement (CRE) helps to establish and maintain a community, which is “a purposeful, open, safe, and just living-learning environment which facilitates the efforts of all students to accomplish their personal and academic goals,” in his/her area of responsibility and throughout the campus.  By working with their peers, Resident Assistants and/or House Assistants, and various other departments on campus, the Coordinator of Residential Engagement accomplishes the goals of the department by communicating University goals, expectations and community standards to members of the community; developing purposeful educational, community service, social, and curricular programs; promoting mutual respect and understanding in a diverse and open community; mediating and resolving conflicts; advising students about University resources; and acting as a liaison between students and other University offices.

CREs assist students’ efforts to adjust to becoming independent and responsible members of an intentional community, many for the first time outside the supervision of a parent or guardian. This entails a wide range of functions that make up the CRE job description.  Identifying issues, concerns and problems for individuals and groups and designating and coordinating an appropriate approach can be complex.

Staff Selection calls for long range planning, the employment of professional skills and knowledge, and the coordination of numerous groups, resources and individuals toward the goal of selecting the best individuals to fill positions in the upcoming school year.

CREs act as a liaison between the residents and Facilities Management, working toward a high quality living environment in the residence hall by communicating work requests to Facilities Management and helping to prioritize jobs.

CREs act as a liaison between students and Housing, Conferences, and Hospitality dealing with issues such as room changes due to roommate conflicts, dissatisfaction with the building, floor or community, housing selection in the spring, and closing and opening the residence halls.
