The Graduate Division of Religion (GDR) regulations require that all students in matriculated programs maintain enrollment in the GDR until the completion of their degree program. To fulfill this requirement, each semester, all matriculated graduate students must be either registered for course work, dissertation research, maintaining matriculation, or on an approved leave of absence. Students should register for maintaining matriculation statuses in sequence as they complete the remaining requirements for their degree program. Most maintaining matriculation statuses are non-repeatable. In some exceptional cases, students can repeat certain statuses with the approval of both the Dean of the Graduate Division of Religion and the University Registrar.

Maintaining Matriculation, M.A. students

For Master of Arts students there are seven maintaining matriculation statuses.

Language Prep

For students preparing for language examination, there are three statuses. As reminder, the statuses must be taken in sequence.

T MM1F 001 MAINTAINING MATRIC., F.T., LANGUAGE PREP., 1st SEMESTER
For M.A. students not registered for courses so as to prepare for the language examination; not repeatable (Full-time status)

T MM2P 001 MAINTAINING MATRIC. P.T., LANGUAGE PREP., 2nd SEMESTER
For M.A. students in their third semester after completing MM1F; Not repeatable; Prerequisite: MM1F (Part-time, less than half time status)

T MM3P 001 MAINTAINING MATRIC. P.T., LANGUAGE PREP., 3rd SEMESTER
For M.A. students in their third semesters after completing MM2P not repeatable; Prerequisite: MM2P (Part-time, less than half time status)

Thesis Prep

Students preparing for the M.A. thesis must register for one of the four statuses below. As reminder, the statuses must be taken in sequence.

T MM3F 001 MAINTAINING MATRIC., F.T., THESIS PREP., 1st SEMESTER
For M.A. students in the first semester after completing courses and language certification; not repeatable (Full-time status)

Maintaining Matriculation, Ph.D. Students

Beginning with registration for Spring 2009, GDR students will require an adviser’s signature to register for all maintaining matriculation statuses. Additional signatures are also required for certain of these statuses, as detailed below.

For Ph.D. students, there are sixteen different maintaining matric. statuses. Ideally, however, they should not use them all, and cannot if they are to complete their program in the seven years permitted. Also, registration fees rise from $500 to $1,000 when a student enters his/her fifth semester of maintaining matric. (For the optimal path through maintaining matric., see the “Detailed Timetable for Earning the Ph.D.” in the GDR Student Handbook, pp. 22-23.)

Scholarships do not cover maintaining matric.fees. (Scholarships do apply to the dissertation year, as to coursework.) Students maintaining matric. full-time are, however, still eligible for financial aid such as Stafford loans.

Language Prep

Students are not supposed to register for the second year of coursework until they have satisfied at least one language requirement; and, ideally, they should have met all language requirements by the time they begin their third year, in which case they do not need to use the language prep. statuses of maintaining matric. If necessary, however, they can register for two semesters of language prep. at full-time status, and an additional two semesters at part-time status.

TP01F 001 MAINTAINING MATRIC., F.T., 1st LANG. PREP. Not repeatable. Full-time status.

TP02F 001 MAINTAINING MATRIC. F.T., 2nd LANG. PREP. Not repeatable. Full-time status.

TP03P 001 MAINTAINING MATRIC., P.T., LANG. PREP. Not repeatable. Part-time status.

TP04P 001 MAINTAINING MATRIC., P.T., LANG. PREP. Not repeatable. Part-time status.

Comprehensive Exam Preparation

Students may not register for comp. exam prep. until they have met all their language requirements. They are normally allowed only two semesters to take and pass their comps. Maintaining matric. for comp. prep. beyond two semesters requires special permission (as detailed below).

TP04F 001 MAINTAINING MATRIC.., F.T., COMP. EXAM PREP., 1st SEMESTER. Not repeatable. Full-time status.

TP05F 001 MAINTAINING MATRIC.,F.T., COMP. EXAM PREP., 2nd SEMESTER. Not repeatable. Full-time status.

TP06F 001 MAINTAINING MATRIC.., F.T., COMP. EXAM PREP. Additional Semester I. Adviser’s approval and Academic Dean’s written permission required. Not repeatable without adviser’s approval and petition to Academic Standing Committee. Full-time status.

TP07P 001 MAINTAINING MATRIC., P.T., COMP. EXAM PREP. Additional Semester II. Adviser’s approval and Academic Dean’s written permission required. Not repeatable without adviser’s approval and petition to ASC.Part-time status.

Dissertation Prospectus Preparation

Students may not register for dissertration prospectus prep. until they have passed all their comp. exams. There are only two available semesters of maintaining matric. for dissertation prospectus prep.

TP08F 001 MAINTAINING MATRIC., F.T., DISS. PROSP. PREP., 1st SEMESTER. Not repeatable. Full time status.

TP09F 001 MAINTAINING MATRIC., F.T., DISS. PROSP. PREP., 2nd SEMESTER. Academic Dean’s written permission required. Not repeatable. Full-time status.

After Dissertation Year

These statuses assume completion of DISST 998 and DISST 999, the two semesters of dissertation year. (Students may not register for DISST 998 without an approved prospectus.)

TP10F 001 MAINTAINING MATRIC., F.T., AFTER DISSERTATION-YEAR WORK I. Requires approval of Dissertation Committee Chair, Academic Dean and Registrar to repeat. In some instances, additional approval from ASC may be required. Full-time status.
