All students registered for Chemistry are required to take the Chemistry placement test which will be administered during Orientation.  If you have any questions, you may contact Dr. Mary-Ann Pearsall, Professor of Chemistry, at mpearsal@drew.edu. 

Prior registration for this examination is not required.

This course will be divided into two sections: Chem 150 and Chem 151. Chem 150 is intended for those students with up to one year of chemistry in high school and Chem 151 is an advanced section designed for students who have a strong high school background (usually two or more years or one very solid year). In Chem 150, we will cover the fundamentals of chemistry. In Chem 151 we will review the fundamentals such as stoichiometry, electron configurations, and equation writing and then go on to cover more topics in more depth.

To help us determine which course is best for you we ask all students to take a diagnostic test which covers some basic math skills as well as chemical concepts. The test is one hour long and has 60 questions. The purpose of this test is not only to place you in Chem 150 or Chem 151 but also to ensure balance between the two Chem 150 sections and to provide us with a guide to topics that need to be addressed in more detail. Therefore this diagnostic placement test is required of all students planning to take Chem 150/151 including those on the waitlist. Students who do not take this test will be dropped from the course after the first week of classes.

We want to reassure you all that this test is for information only and will not count towards your grade. You will also be given the opportunity to state your preference of Chem 150 and Chem 151.
