Summer in the City: Wall Street Program Offered by Drew

MADISON, NJ—This summer, Drew University will unlock the world of high finance for 25 students selected to take part in the school’s first-ever summer program on Wall Street.  Economics Professor Marc Tomljanovich will lead the four-week program, which is based on Drew’s popular Wall Street semester.  Students who participate will learn about financial markets, regulators and basic economic principles.

“Everyone needs a certain level of economic literacy to drive their financial decisions,” said Tomljanovich.  “That’s why we’ve designed the summer Wall Street program to be interesting and useful to students with academic interests outside economics and business.”

Summer Wall Street will run for four weeks beginning on June 22.  Students will travel to New York City’s financial district each week from Monday through Thursday to hear guest lectures from prominent brokers and SEC officials, and visit banks, exchanges and securities firms.

The first part of the program will focus on how supply and demand are related to financial markets.  This will be followed by lessons on and visits to bond and stock markets.  The role of the SEC and other regulatory bodies will also be discussed throughout the program.

In order to be considered for admission, students must submit their college transcript and a written statement on why they wish to participate.  A select number of high school students will also be accepted into the program.  The online application can be found here.

Tomljanovich, who is used to teaching the ways of Wall Street to economics and business majors, is looking forward to having non-majors in the summer program.  “Finance touches everyone’s life in many ways, and this program focuses on many of them.”
