Film Screening to Expose Holocaust Hideaway

MADISON, NJ—Between 1942 and 1944, Frances Malkin, a Polish Jewish toddler, was hidden from Hitler’s Nazi regime in the barn of Francisca Halamajowa.  The only thing that stood between Malkin and capture was the Catholic farmer’s willingness to risk her own life to save Jewish refugees hiding on her property.  On April 22, Drew University will mark Yom HaShoah, the Jewish day of Holocaust remembrance, with a screening of the film “No. 4 Street of Our Lady,” which recounts the story of Halamajowa’s bravery.  Malkin, now an American citizen, will offer remarks at the event.

“No. 4 Street of Our Lady” is based on the diary of Moshe Maltz, another refugee hidden by Halamajowa.  His granddaughter and the film’s co-producer, Judy Maltz, will be on hand to speak at the event along with Barbara Bird, the other co-producer.

Drew’s Yom HaShoah commemoration is presented by the school’s Center for Holocaust/Genocide Study, a non-profit organization that welcomes donations and memberships.

The April 22 event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Seryl and Charles Kushner Family Foundation.  It will begin at 10:00 a.m. in Drew’s Baldwin Gymnasium.  For more information, please call 973/408-3600 or e-mail ctrholst@drew.edu.
