Drew Gallery to Exhibit Works of Caren Canier
MADISON, NJ--Works by New York-based artist Caren Canier will be on display in Drew University’s Korn Gallery from March 24 through April 18. The exhibit’s opening reception will be on April 3 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Many of Canier’s paintings are inspired by historical and literary sources. Her work is heavily influenced by the Italian Renaissance, and early and contemporary photographs from books and magazines. She frequently studies 19th century images of figures in motion and incorporates her observations in her paintings. The artist is also inspired by her personal collection of family photos from the 1940s and 50s.
Canier, who is also a professor of art at New York’s Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute, has received several awards and honors, including a grant from the Pollock/Krasner Foundation; the Artist’s Fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts; and the Rome Prize Fellowship from the American Academy in Rome. Her work is frequently exhibited in the United States and abroad. She holds a BFA from Cornell University and a MFA from Boston University.
The Korn Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The gallery also has hours by appointment. For more information about its Caren Canier exhibit, please call Gabriele Hiltl-Cohen, gallery coordinator, at 973/408-3758 or e-mail ghiltlco@drew.edu.
