Women and Genocide in Rwanda Topic of Mar. 18 Panel
MADISON, NJ—In the aftermath of 1994 Rwandan genocide, there
was a countrywide effort to rebuild and reorganize. The vital role played by women, who helped
restore order to families, society and government, will be the topic of a March
18 panel discussion at Drew University.
The program, “Rwanda: Rebuilding, Reconciliation and
Renewal,” will feature several experts on conflict resolution and the state of
Rwandan affairs after the 1994 genocide. Panelists include Oliva Stokes Dreier, associate director of the Karuna
Center for Peacebuilding; Eugenie Mukeshimana, genocide survivor; and Stephanie
Urdang, founder and U.S. coordinator of Rwanda Gift for Life, a nonprofit
organization that supports Rwandan rape victims living with HIV/AIDS. Joyce Reilly will serve as the panel’s
moderator. She is a co-convener of New
Jersey Responds to the Crisis in Darfur and a member of the Board of Associates
of the Drew University Center for Holocaust/Genocide Study, one of the
program’s sponsors.
“Rwanda:
Rebuilding, Reconciliation and Renewal” is also sponsored by Drew’s Women’s and
Gender Studies Program. It will begin at
7:00 p.m. in room 4 in the school’s Hall of Sciences. It is open to all members of the community
and is free of charge. For more
