Drew Supports the Troops: U. Offers Veterans Free Tuition

MADISON, NJ—Drew University announced today that it will offer free tuition to qualified veterans of the U.S. armed forces beginning this fall.  In so doing, the school becomes one of the first private institutions in the nation to extend this benefit to America’s military veterans.  Allowances for housing, books and supplies are also built into the program.

“We’re very excited to be able to make this offer.  Aside from being able to reward these brave men and women with an excellent education, we’re also looking forward to the world perspective that they’ll bring into our classrooms,” said Ron Ross, Drew’s dean of continuing education and career services.  “This program is sure to enrich the Drew experience for all our students.”

Funding for this program is coming from Drew University, the Yellow Ribbon program and the new GI Bill, also known as the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008.  The bill guarantees tuition funding for each qualified veteran in any amount under or equal to in-state tuition at their state’s highest-priced public institution.  The remaining tuition expenses at Drew will be split evenly between the university and the Yellow Ribbon program, which provides veterans with a broader range of educational options.  In order to be eligible for free tuition, applicants must have served a minimum of three years of active duty beginning on or after September 11, 2001.

Veterans who attend Drew will do so as part of the school’s adult degree program, which offers services designed to meet the unique needs and challenges of adult undergraduates.
