100% Recycled Paper Makes Drew Debut

MADISON, NJ--Starting January 1, 2009, Drew University began purchasing 100% post-consumer content, 100% processed chlorine-free recycled paper to be used campus-wide in all copiers and office printers. In switching from 30% post-consumer content paper for its offices, Drew takes an important step in its environmental commitment to raise awareness and move toward a more sustainable Drew.

Annually, using 100% post-consumer recycled paper means Drew will save 204 trees, save 140 million BTU’s or enough energy to power an average U.S. home for 4 years, prevent 17,708 pounds of greenhouse gases from being released, and keep 9,439 pounds of solid waste out of the landfill.

“As the University in the Forest, we’re excited to be using paper that comes from paper and not from trees,” said Drew Sustainability Coordinator Christina Notas. “Using 100% post-consumer recycled paper means we are closing the loop on recycling efforts by purchasing recycled products and helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

Efforts to switch Drew’s copy paper to a greener source come from the Drew University Purchasing Department.
