The world of New York theatre is just an hour away.

University now offers six N.Y.C. semesters.

September 2016 – Drew University’s stable of semesters in New York City just got bigger.

Specifically, the University added semesters focused on social entrepreneurship and theatre, expanding its offering to six. The Semester on Social Entrepreneurship, which begins in January, is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors, and the Semester on New York Theatre, which starts in August, is designed for seniors majoring or minoring in theatre arts.

The N.Y.C. semesters take advantage of a key Drew asset: its proximity to New York. The school is just an hour away from a bevvy of out-of-classroom experiences in the Big Apple. Other semesters (see sidebar below) center on the United Nations, Wall Street, media and communications and contemporary art.

“These New York semesters are terrific experiences for students. They get a fascinating and immersive experiential education opportunity in their professional field of interest,” said Debra Liebowitz, associate dean at the College of Liberal Arts.

“Having the opportunity to meaningfully engage as an undergraduate student in the worlds of New York theatre, social entrepreneurship, finance, art or international politics is an unparalleled opportunity,” Liebowitz added. “These semesters also bring together the core of Drew’s strengths: amazing faculty mentorship, experiential education and the use of all that New York has to offer.”

Directing the Semester on Social Entrepreneurship is Professor of Economics Jennifer Olmsted. The focus is on how nonprofits use business acumen to solve social problems. Participants will learn the skills necessary to succeed in the sector and tackle real-world challenges with the help of a social change organization. The deadline for applying is Oct. 10.

Two professors in the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance, Lisa Brenner and Chris Ceraso, are directing the Semester on New York Theatre, during which students will develop and perform an original ensemble piece, with help from a highly acclaimed N.Y. theatre company, Tectonic Theater Project. The development will take place in the fall and the performances in the spring—first at Tectonic and then at Drew. March 10 is the application deadline.
