Saif Yasin C’17 Receives Goldwater Scholarship Honorable Mention
Sophomore scientist is also a Baldwin Honors Scholar, Civic Scholar and founder of Drew’s Debate Team.
Saif Yasin C’17, a biochemistry major, received an honorable mention in the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship competition, which received more than 1,200 applicants this year. Yasin, who has been taking advanced classes and performing biochemistry research, said he plans to apply for the scholarship again next year.
“Receiving the Goldwater was extremely validating for me to really believe that I could have a future career in research,” Yasin said. “Many of the other students who received the award or honorable mention are doing amazing work, and I could not believe I am at their level because of the opportunities at Drew.”
During his first two years at Drew, Yasin has been studying the chemicals that break down the bonds that hold together RNA, how they react under different conditions and what implications that holds for the future.
“He was a standout in his classes,” said Chemistry Professor Adam Cassano, who oversaw Yasin’s research. “He has been very advanced in terms of his course work and regularly performs at the top of his class.”
Yasin said the opportunity to do scientific research was one of the things that led him to Drew. He participated in Drew’s Summer Science Institute—an intensive summer research course—and is already thinking of his next research project.
Yasin is also the vice president of the Biology Honor Society, the president of the Drew Chemistry Society, the president of the Drew Debate Team (which he founded), a RISE Scholar, a Civic Scholar and Baldwin Honors Scholar.
Following graduation, Yasin plans to attend medical school and earn a doctoral degree in biochemistry.
