Music at Drew and the Liberal Arts Philosophy
All courses of study in the Music department at Drew run under our Liberal Arts philosophy. While many of our music majors go on to careers associated with music, our purpose within the University is not primarily to train professional musicians, but to make the music experience available to all students, no matter what their major.This means that at Drew, you will not have to battle a conservatory of music majors for a position in a singing or instrumental ensemble or solo as you might have to in other schools. One look across our ensembles and in classrooms reveals that their membership includes virtually every major and minor available at the University.
This is not to say that one cannot concentrate on voice, instrument, theory/composition or music history at Drew, but it is to say that one need not make it your major focus in order to have it be an enjoyable and enriching part of your college experience.
