The Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) was founded in 1880. It is the largest and oldest society devoted to the learned study of the Bible. The Society of Biblical Literature Collection represents this long-standing organization and its growth and development over the past 130 years. First arriving at Drew University in 2001, the SBL Collection spans the full history of the society and provides valuable insight into its institutional inner-workings.

The SBL Collection includes correspondence, meeting minutes, membership files, budget-related documents, and other administrative files dating back to 1880. In addition, the collection contains a wide selection of information related to the publishing aspects of the institution, including the Journal of Biblical Literature. These publishing files consist of manuscripts, artistic and editorial documents, research materials, and authors’ files. A significant aspect of the collection is the inclusion of hundreds of printed books from well-known biblical publishers, including Abingdon Press, Brill Publishers, Scholars Press, and the Society of Biblical Literature itself.

The books are fully cataloged and available for consultation in the Wilson Reading Room. The manuscript materials are currently in process and may not be available for research. For more information, please contact speccol@drew.edu.
