The Methodist Archive will undergo renovation from December 2012 through August 2013.
The Methodist Library is a research library containing the non-circulating Methodist collections of the Drew University Library and of the General Commission on Archives and History.
Methodist Library Collections
The Methodist Library houses a large collection of books on Methodism, Methodist agency minutes and conference journals, Methodist magazines and newspapers, dissertations on microfilm, biographical and genealogical materials, and artifacts relating to Methodist history.
The University Library has duplicate copies of many of the materials in the Methodist Library. These copies are available for circulation to those with Drew Library borrowing privileges. This Methodist collection of “B” and “BY” call number books is located on Level E of the Library.
Using the Materials
Our collections are available to anyone interested in the history of Methodism. The Wilson Reading Room of the Methodist Library contains a selection of current periodicals, a small reference collection of bibliographies, encyclopedias, standard editions of Wesley works, basic texts in history, doctrine, polity and worship, and Methodist conference journals and theological school catalogs. The remainder of the collections are held in closed stacks. Drew University students, faculty and staff must present a bar-coded Drew ID card when materials are requested from the stacks. Non-Drew researchers must present a form of identification, such as a driver’s license or credit card.
Archival material from the collections of Drew University and the General Commission on Archives and History may also be used in the Wilson Reading Room. Although walk-in researchers are always welcomed, those wishing to use archival collections are encouraged to consult with the staff of the General Commission regarding access to and proper use of these materials. Information on archival research material can be accessed through the online inventories web page.
Because the Methodist Library contains one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of Methodist materials in the world, certain security measures are followed. Materials do not circulate outside the building. Upon request staff members will retrieve materials for use in the Wilson Reading Room. Briefcases, backpacks, etc., are prohibited in the Wilson Reading Room. Lockers are provided for the temporary storage of such items.
Searching the Collections
Cataloged materials in the Methodist Library are searchable through the Drew Library Catalog. There are two computer workstations available for public use in the Wilson Reading Room. Conference journals and annual minutes and reports of the various Methodist denominations do not appear in the online catalog. Please consult the staff for access to these materials.
A photocopier and a microfilm reader/printer are available, although not all materials may be copied. Please consult reading room staff regarding photocopying of a particular item. Payment for photocopies is by cash or check. The fee for digital images is $10 if an image is in public domain, regardless of whether the intended usage is personal or commercial. If the image is under copyright, the fee is $10 for personal use and $40 for commercial/trade publication. For images under copyright, researchers must fill out our permission-to-publish form. For use of personal digital cameras or scanners, please consult with the Methodist Librarian. The same fees may apply.
