<p>Congratulations to <strong>Professor Edward Baring</strong> and <strong>Dr. Linda Connors, C ‘64</strong>, winners of the <strong>Bela Kornitzer awards for outstanding non-fiction books</strong>.  Non-fiction books published in 2011 and 2012 were eligible for the competition.  Two prizes were awarded—one to a member of the Drew Faculty and one to a Drew graduate.</p>
<p>The awards were announced at the January 19, 2013 biennial Library Gala by Noémi K. Neidorff, who paid tribute to her uncle and to her parents who established the award in his name, and presented by Vivian Bull, President and Andrew Scrimgeour, Dean of Libraries.</p>

<p>The Kornitzer Prize Endowment was established twenty years ago by the late Alicia Kornitzer Karpati and her husband George Karpati to honor Bela Kornitzer, Mrs. Karpati’s brother, for his achievements as a journalist and author in Hungary and the United States.  The Drew University Library houses among its special collections the Bela Kornitzer Collection.  The award includes a $2,000 prize.</p>

<p>The Friends of the Library will host their tenth biennial Benefit Dinner on <strong>January 19, 2013</strong>, with <strong>Honorary Dinner Chairs, Robert and Vivian Bull.</strong> The evening begins at Kirby Theatre with a program featuring award-winning historian and literary critic <strong>David S. Reynolds</strong>, who will speak on <strong>“Mightier than the Sword: Uncle Tom’s Cabin and the Battle for America”</strong>—the title of his most recent book (2011).</p>
<p>Reynolds, a Distinguished Professor at the Graduate Center of the City of New York, is the author or editor of 15 books including <em>Waking Giant: America in the Age of Jackson</em> (2008), <em>Walt Whitman</em> (2005), and <em>John Brown: Abolitionist</em> (2005), and is the editor of what is considered the definitive reproduction of <em>Uncle Tom’s</em> <em>Cabin</em> (2011). He is the winner of the Bancroft Prize, the Christian Gauss Award, the Ambassador Book Award, the Gustavus Myers Outstanding Book Award, and finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Reynolds is a frequent contributor to the New York Times Book Review.</p>
<p>Following the 6 p.m. program, guests will gather in Mead Hall for the Gala reception and dinner, including presentation of the Béla Kornitzer book prizes. The Gala benefits the Friends of the Library Book Endowment Fund.</p>

<p>The Kornitzer Award was established in 1992, by Alicia and George Karpati to honor the achievements of Mrs. Karpati&#8217;s brother, Belá Kornitzer, as a journalist and author in Hungary and the United States. <p>Congratulations to Professor Sharon Sundue and Dr. Robert McParland, G’05, winners of the Bela Kornitzer awards for outstanding non-fiction books. Non-fiction books published in 2009 and 2010 were eligible for the 2010 prize competition. Two prizes were awarded—one to a Drew Graduate and one to a member of the Drew Faculty. The awards were announced at the January 29, 2011 biennial Library Gala by Dean of Libraries Andrew Scrimgeour and presented by Noémi K. Neidorff, who paid tribute to her uncle and to her parents, who established the award in his name.</p>
