TECHNOLOGY AT THE NEXUS OF TEACHING & RESEARCH

Technology is most often referred to as a tool for teaching. However, in a recent bi-locational, virtual class, students and teachers experienced technology as “meaning maker” which transformed pedagogical style, power relationships, and the overall learning experience. She will reflect on the various technologies used and how she understands them to contribute to the shaping of the class community.

Linked Open Data is an approach to the creation of digital resources that emphasizes connections between diverse information on the basis of published and stable web addresses (URIs) that identify common concepts and individual items. The Linked Ancient World Data Institutes intellectual scope is the Ancient Mediterranean and Ancient Near East, two fields in which a large and increasing number of digital resources is available, with rich coverage of the archaeology, literature and history of these regions.

Using EndNoteWeb you can easily drop citations into a common database of your own, sort by topic and search, and generate both notes and bibliographies easily in a multiplicity of formats.

Bring your laptop if you have one.

An Exhibit of the Papers of Gilbert Haven donated by the Charles Eric North Family

and holder of the B.D. degree from Drew

Light refreshments.  All welcome.

The exhibit includes photos, letters, and other texts related to these two important individuals in the history of Methodism. The exhibit has resulted from the generous gift of the Charles Eric North Family to the General Commission on Archives and History of The United Methodist Church containing possibly about 1000 letters to and from Gilbert Haven, a vocal abolitionist and advocate for the rights of African Americans. The family are also descendants of Frank Mason North, hymn writer and advocate for social reform, and thus the exhibit recognizes the work of both men.

Gilbert Haven was editor of Zion’s Herald and a bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, 1872-1880. Frank Mason North is best known for the hymn, “Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life.” The desk used by North sits in the lobby of the Methodist Archives Center and his papers are housed at Drew. This exhibit is the reminder that the quest for “liberty and justice” for all is ongoing but one with deep roots in Drew’s and in Methodism’s past.

Heise http://www.drew.edu/library/?p=6341 The United Methodist Archives and History Center at Drew University will undergo a major renovation during 2012-13. This work is made possible thanks to a generous gift from the university’s long-time benefactor Norman Tomlinson, who has previously given the Drew University Library significant collections of Byron, Whitman and Churchill. A new, ideal climate-controlled environment will be installed on the second floor, including a non-water fire-suppressant system. Security measures will be tightened, and movable compact shelving will replace the traditional shelving, thereby doubling storage capacity.

Work is scheduled to run from December 2012 through August 2013. Collections housed on the second floor will be moved to temporary storage areas. These collections include all Methodist books, periodicals, pamphlets and serials, as well as the Byron Society of America collection and the Society for Biblical Literature archive. They will be unavailable for the duration of the renovation project. All Methodist manuscript collections, microforms, Drew University Library’s special collections and Drew University Archives will continue to be available.

Historian David S. Reynolds, Featured Author

Library Gala 2013

The Friends of the Library will host their tenth biennial Benefit Dinner on January 19, 2013, with Honorary Dinner Chairs, Robert and Vivian Bull. The evening begins at Kirby Theatre with a program featuring award-winning historian and literary critic David S. Reynolds, who will speak on “Mightier than the Sword: Uncle Tom’s Cabin and the Battle for America”—the title of his most recent book (2011).

Reynolds, a Distinguished Professor at the Graduate Center of the City of New York, is the author or editor of 15 books including Waking Giant: America in the Age of Jackson (2008), Walt Whitman (2005), and John Brown: Abolitionist (2005), and is the editor of what is considered the definitive reproduction of Uncle Tom’s Cabin (2011). He is the winner of the Bancroft Prize, the Christian Gauss Award, the Ambassador Book Award, the Gustavus Myers Outstanding Book Award, and finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Reynolds is a frequent contributor to the New York Times Book Review.

Following the 6 p.m. program, guests will gather in Mead Hall for the Gala reception and dinner, including presentation of the Béla Kornitzer book prizes. The Gala benefits the Friends of the Library Book Endowment Fund.
