John McEllhenney, T’59
Evolution of a Bookish Magpie
The Rev. John G. McEllhenney, an alumnus of Drew University Theological School, is a lifelong collector with special interests in Methodism, Robert Frost, and the Welsh poet and Anglican clergyman, R.S. Thomas (1913-2000). Thomas has been described as one of the three greatest poets writing about God in English, along with John Donne and George Herbert.
McEllhenney is the collector and donor of the unique and extensive R.S. Thomas Collection, which is among the Library’s Special Collections. He is also the author of A Model for Doubting Believers: R. S. Thomas and His Poetry, forthcoming from Wipf & Stock. McEllhenney developed a personal relationship with Thomas during the last decade of his life.
Please join Dean of Libraries Andrew Scrimgeour and the Friends of the Library for this third talk in the Library’s afternoon series, Conversations on Collecting, which also promises to be the occasion for an announcement of a special gift to the Library.
All are welcome to attend, February 8, 2012, at 4:00 p.m., in the Library’s Pilling Room. Light refreshments will be available, sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
