Collecting Political Ephemera During Revolutions
A conversation with Dr. James Fraser

During a 50-year library career, Dr. James Fraser has worked as an “elusive materials” consultant for major libraries around the world, from Berlin to Tokyo to Stockholm, including the Library of Congress and Harvard and Yale university libraries.
His collecting interests range over materials gathered from the GDR before and after the “Wall” of 1961; European materials from the social upheaval of the 1960s; the USSR during the period of glasnost; the Middle-East during the 1970s and 1980s, and more. Dr. Fraser founded and edited an international research journal for children’s literature, Phaedrus, has served on editorial boards for a number of journals and newsletters, and has contributed numerous articles to research journals on printing history, book design, children’s and youth literature history, graphic design, publishing history, and poster history. He has received numerous awards for research work, including the “Obelisk” for research and publications in American poster history.
