FacLab iPad Program

ITS is pleased to announce a pilot iPad program, starting in Fall 2012. We have 10 iPad 3’s available to faculty for short-term student class projects. The intention of this program is for a faculty member to take out 10 iPads for students to use for a class over a 2-week period. This is an opportunity for Drew faculty to try out these devices with their students to see if they are useful for teaching and learning. CLA, Theological School, and Graduate School faculty are encouraged to participate, however distance courses cannot be accommodated in the program.

To learn more about the program and using iPads for teaching and learning contact Nicole Pinto (npinto@drew.edu or x3244).

Suggested Uses

Teacher/Student Clicker - is a student response system that allows you to create quizzes for students to access from any mobile device or computer. You can select to have the results of your quizzes emailed to you as a PDF.

Prezi - You can create a free Educational account at Prezi.com. This website allows you to create free presentations and store them on the web. The iPad App then allows you to pull your saved presentations from Prezi.com and present them using an iPad VGA adaptor in any of Drew’s TILE classrooms.

Slideshark - This is a cloud based Web 2.0 tool that allows you to store your PowerPoint presentations on the web by creating a free account at slideshark.com. Then by downloading the iPad App you can project your PowerPoint for a group using Drew’s TILE classrooms. (iPad VGA adaptor is needed)

Evernote - Allows you to capture anything; photos, documents, audio. This allows students to brainstorm using media which can then be shared with other students and accessed anywhere via device or computer.

Skitch - This App works along side with Evernote; you can annotate websites, photos and maps and insert them into Evernote.

ShowMe - This is a great App that allows teacher to create video lessons using a whiteboard and audio. Students can use this app to demonstrate their knowledge/understanding of a certain topic. A free account must be created on showme.com which allows each person to store their video creations and access them from any computer or device.

News apps, internet browsing - There are several news apps that can be downloaded depending on the type of material you wish you students to research. Ex: Ny Times, BBC News and CNN. Groups of students can easily find specific articles to use a reference for class discussions.

Google Earth

  • Navigate the world with a swipe of your finger
  • Swipe with two fingers to adjust your view to see mountainous terrain
  • Show the Panoramio layer and browse the millions of geo-located photos from around the world
  • View geo-located Wikipedia articles
  • Use the Location feature to fly to your current location
  • Search for cities, places, and business around the globe with Google Local Search

Dropbox- is a free service that lets you bring your photos, docs, and videos anywhere and share them easily. It is also a good way for faculty members and students to save projects completed using FacLab iPads for future use (since all files on the iPads will be removed after they are returned).
