Orvieto, located in the Umbria region known as the “Green Heart of Italy,” is recognized as one of the world’s most beautiful towns with its breathtaking panoramas, hills, vineyards, olive trees and medieval towers. Halfway between Rome and Florence, it is the perfect site to learn Italian, and Italian history and culture. You will learn/improve your Italian language skills as well as participate in cooking classes, art workshops, fashion seminars and community-based learning experiences with local volunteer organizations. Classes will be held at the renowned Istituto Di Lingua E Cultura Italiana LinguaSi.

Course Selection

Credits earned will apply towards a Drew degree and can be used for the Foreign Language and General Education requirements, the Italian minor and special major. You will take a total of 8 credit-hours: the appropriate Italian language course and the Italian Culture/Community-Based Learning course.

Language Course

You will register for one of the 4 credit language classes at the appropriate level. This will be determined by a placement test given at the beginning of the program in Orvieto.

Culture/Community-Based Learning Course

The following 4-credit course will allow you to explore Italian history and culture through three of the major areas for which Italy is famous in the world: Arts, Fashion, and Food. Activities will include cooking classes, art workshops, fashion seminars, projects, cultural excursions and exchanges with native speakers, singing and a talent show. There will also be a Community-Based Learning component that will give students the possibility to interact with local volunteer organizations in order to increase their civic, cultural and linguistic understanding while contributing to the mission of the organizations. Taught in Italian and English. Fulfills the following General Education requirements: BHUM, CIVE.

ITAL 385 Italy 360: Arts, Fashion, Food and Community-Based Learning

Program Director

Dr. Emanuele Occhipinti, Associate Professor of Italian and Chair of the French and Italian Department, will supervise and coordinate all educational (teaching, syllabi, tests and final grades) and extracurricular activities, such as field trips, museum tours, and the weekend in Florence. He will always be available on site to ensure students’ general welfare.

Program Cost

The program is $3,900.

  • 8 credits of tuition (one language class and one culture/community-based learning class)
  • Family home stays (breakfast daily and 4 weekly dinners)
  • Airport pick-up, Rome to Orvieto
  • Excursions to Lake Bolsena and Civita di Bagnoregio, Perugina chocolate factory, and a weekend in Florence (includes train, hotel and half board)
  • Museum and other entrance fees
  • All cultural activities such as cooking classes, ceramic art workshops, fashion seminar, Orvieto underground, film showings, olive oil seminar/tasting

Airfare, lunches and 3 dinners per week, books,and incidental and personal expenses are not included.

Eligibility

A completed application including an on-line faculty recommendation is required. You must be in good academic and disciplinary standing from the time of application until the end of the program.
