Drew in Umbria – Archaeology Field School in Italy

Students have the option of participating in either of two 3-week sessions on an archaeological excavation, taking a 4 credit Classics Department course in archaeological field research and the material culture of the local region of Italy in antiquity, including a few field trips to local sites and museums. The excavation will take place 13 km outside the Italian city of Todi, approximately 1 1/2 hours north of Rome in the Tiber River Valley. The site itself is located just outside the small town of Massa Martana to the east of Todi, in a field beside the 8th-9th century church of S. Maria in Pantano.

Students will live in apartments in the nearby town of Massa Martana, equipped with modern amenities. Most meals will be eaten together there and students will share some household chores.

Program Cost

The fee for the 2012 Summer program $3,500 per session. Students will also be charged the $25 registration fee for summer courses.

The cost includes:

  • 4 credits of tuition
  • shared rooms in local apartments
  • most meals
  • field trips to local sites and museums, airfare, transportation to the site, a few meals, incidental and personal expenses are not included.

Eligibility

Drew students: A completed on-line application which includes an unofficial transcript and a faculty recommendation is required. Students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing from the time of application until the end of the program. Apply online.
