Leavell-Oberg Summer Fellowships

After four decades of teaching at Drew University, J. Perry Leavell retired from his position as Professor of History. The History Department and the Office of Alumni Relations are pleased to announce that an endowed fund has been established to honor his extraordinary service to the university and hundreds of Drew students.

At Professor Leavell’s suggestion, the fund will provide internship and research stipends for students studying History. Many internships are unpaid or offer only minimal stipends, and student research is largely unfunded. As a result, students are often unable to pursue these paths of study because they need to take paid employment in order to pay for tuition, room and board. The fund established in Perry’s honor will not only allow individual students to take advantage of valuable academic opportunities, but also strengthen the entire History department by attracting promising students who can in turn enrich the program as a result of their experiential learning and advanced studies.
