Au pair Program Information

Drew University’s Community Education Audit (CEA) program provides adults and other community members the opportunity to sit in on undergraduate courses at a substantially reduced fee. The cost is $295 for auditing regular undergraduate classes and $395 for ESL classes.

Drew’s College of Liberal Arts has the primary responsibility of educating its undergraduate students, thus some classes, such as the more hands-on studio art, writing, and computer science classes, are not appropriate for auditors. However, there are plenty of other courses to pick and choose from! Please refer to the link listed below for dates and times of class meetings this term.

Please Note: All applications and course approvals are coordinated through the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies’ (CSGS) Admission Office. It is our responsibility to determine space availability, contact professors to obtain their permission for an auditor placement, and register students on a first-come/first-serve basis.  Courses are subject to change/cancellation without prior notice.

Who Can Participate

Applications are welcome from:

  • ADULTS (24 yrs & older) who hold an undergraduate or advanced degree or have special interests or educational needs.
  • VISITING AU PAIRS are also allowed and encouraged to apply as long as: they can demonstrate a proficiency with English AND they can commit to attending class on a regular basis. It is NOT possible to begin auditing a course after the semester has started, nor is it acceptable to LEAVE class before it has ended.

Applying to the Program

Complete the current term’s application (either online or print out the form in the program booklet and mail in) by the deadlines listed on the application form and submit it to CSGS office.

Please do not contact professors directly regarding participation in a course. Any questions should be directed to CSGS Admission, as all registration requests are handled through our office.

When will I receive an admission decision?

We will confirm your request via an e-receipt upon receipt of your application.  Official notification of your acceptance into a class will not come until approximately one week prior to the start of the term. We will call and notify you earlier if at all possible or if we anticipate a problem.

Payments

New and easier payment processing steps will be applied to all CEA undergraduate class auditors starting with spring 2013 participants. No payments need to accompany your registration for auditing CEA undergraduate classes. However, all ESL payments will continue to go through the offices of the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies. Please review the Payment guidelines in the CEA program booklet or on our Spring 2013 course offerings web page.

Tuition and Fees

  • Community Education Audit Program: $295 per course (excludes studio arts, writing, and theater courses).
  • ESL: $395 per course

Restrictions

  • If a course is full and has students on a wait list, we can not place an auditor in that course.
  • The number of auditors placed in one class can not exceed 10% of the total number of regular students enrolled in it. If requests for a specific course exceed this limit, applications will be addressed on a first-come first-serve basis.
  • The Caspersen School of Graduate Studies can place auditors in science or math lectures, but can not guarantee placement in a corresponding lab/recitation. Lab details should be worked out individually with the instructor after the start of class.
  • Art studio courses and computer science courses are not open to Community Auditors during the regular academic year due to the high demand from Drew undergraduates.
  • English writing courses are typically not open to participants in the CEA program. However, those courses with fewer than 15 enrolled participants welcome Community Auditors who are willing to fully participate in the course. Low enrollment in writing courses is rare; please contact our office if you would like to receive last minute (first day of classes or later) notification of an opening.
  • Courses/programs offered through the Off-Campus Programs office are not available to Community Auditors including the Semester on Contemporary Art and the Semester on the United Nations. College Seminars are also not available to Community Auditors.
  • Professors are under no obligation to grade papers or exams for Community Auditors, but many do encourage reading and participating in discussion. On the first day of class, you should speak with the professor in order to clarify his or her policy concerning Community Auditors.
  • This program applies only to courses offered in the College of Liberal Arts. For information on the Community Fellows program available in the Theological School please call 973-408-3571. The Caspersen School of Graduate Studies does not allow auditors in its graduate classes.

Community Education Auditor Perks

  • Parking passes are now available through the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies in the S.W. Bowne Building, room 110.   Parking passes will be distributed within your Orientation Paks which you will receive the week before classes begin.  This parking permit is complementary and is valid for one semester only.   Please do not visit the Public Safety office for a parking permit.
  • A temporary library card is also available to you through the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies office during the time you are participating in courses at Drew.
  • Access to Drew’s computer network is not a privilege normally granted to Community Auditors.  However, if your professor deems it necessary for you to obtain network access in order to participate fully as an auditor, arrangements can be made to connect you to the system.  Visit the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies with this request during the first week of classes.   Please be aware that it does take about one to two weeks from your request for a network account to be activated.
