About the Program
The History and Culture program concentrates on the intellectual and cultural history of modern Europe and America. It trains its students both for careers in academia and for related nonacademic work in publishing, cultural journalism, museums, and philanthropy. It offers M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in History, though its faculty is drawn from a wide range of disciplines. And it particularly encourages innovative methodological approaches to the study of the past.
The doctoral program permits students to complete the degree in five years: during that time they receive full financial support. They will also have the opportunity to teach their own courses: unlike most other graduate programs, ours does not require students to work as teaching assistants in large lecture classes.
Admission to the program is highly selective. Its small size makes for a closely cooperative intellectual community, in which the faculty can devote individual attention to each student. Learn more about the program.
