Two-time World Series champion Keith Hernandez talks with Pulitzer Prize-winning sports journalist Ira Berkow. Hernandez, considered one of the best first-basemen ever, was a star with the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1970s and early 1980s and a key figure in the rebirth of the New York Mets in the ‘80s, culminating in the team’s last world championship, in 1986.
A thinking man’s player, Hernandez was as adept at pouncing on bunts to get the lead runner as cracking a New York Times crossword puzzle. He is also a student of history, particularly the Civil War, having read countless books on the subject and visited battle sites.
Today, Hernandez is a broadcaster for SNY, providing commentary on Mets games. This fall, he joined Fox Sports as a studio analyst for postseason games. What’s more, he is working on an autobiography: in the spring, Little Brown & Co. is expected to publish I’m Keith Hernandez.
