Description: This course explores the contribution that sociology makes to our understanding of environmental issues and encourages disciplined thinking about real problems. Students are required to read the assigned works, not simply to analyze them, but to find inspiration for their own writing projects as they move from being consumers of theories to being engaged researchers. There are almost as many debates and theories about “environment” and “nature” as there are phenomena grouped under those headings. This course will critically examine several approaches to “the environment” through a variety of perspectives, both past and present. We will pay special attention to issues such as the social construction of environmental crises, waste, sustainability, risk, ethics, consumption and materialism, ecofeminism, environmental justice, biotechnology, and social action. Together we will discover that the Sociology of the Environment is a dynamic, imaginative field ripe for fresh contribution from students and scholars.
