Writing placement is divided into three parts:
Part 1: Guided Self-Placement
Before working on your fall course selections, use the description of Drew’s composition courses to help you select the most appropriate writing class. Please consider the writing instruction you have already received, your attitudes about writing, and your sense of your own competency and then use those answers and the self-placement checklist to help you select the most appropriate composition class.
Part 2: Placement Confirmation Test
After going through the guided self-placement process, take the on-line guided placement confirmation assessment. You should also have read Three Cups of Tea, the 2009 Common Reading (which will be mailed to you shortly), before taking this test. This test includes summary and synthesis writing and reading comprehension, and allows us to assess each student’s strengths and needs in the context of the entering class.
Part 3: Placement Advising
If your test results suggest that a different course might be more appropriate than the one you’ve selected for yourself, the Director of Composition and/or your faculty adviser will contact you and discuss these alternatives with you. The emphasis of this model is self-assessment, informed choice, and the articulation of a rationale for that choice. Only in rare cases will the student’s self-placement not be upheld.
