Instructions for Registering Online

Online registration follows a three phase process:

1. Pending Registration

Using the course list you should start the process of registration on or after Monday, November 16, 2009. by working out a preferred course of study. Since your first choice could be closed, you should also include alternates on your schedule as well. When you have completed your schedule, log into CampusWeb and select the "My Registration" option to access the on-line registration system. During the pending registration phase you will be able to enter courses into the computer system. Important note: you are not officially registered until you have A) received approval from your academic advisor and B) made your registration official during the official registration days (see below).

2. Advisor Approval

When you complete your pending registration in CampusWeb, click on the "submit and e-mail advisor" button. Your registration will then be forwarded to your academic advisor for review along with an e-mail message informing him/her of this action. You should schedule an appointment with your academic advisor to discuss and approve your registration. Since you must verify that you have obtained the permission of the instructor to register for a course that requires the professor's signature, please secure all required signatures before you meet with your academic advisor. (You may use the "printer friendly" option to produce a record of your registration and to obtain any required course instructors' signatures.)

3. Official Registration

After your academic advisor approves your registration you will be able to make your registration official during the scheduled registration period. This registration period begins Monday, November 30, 2009, and ends Thursday, December 3, 2009. During this time, a "register" button will be available in CampusWeb. You must click this button to officially register for your classes. Important note: During this process you will be notified if courses you have selected during the pending registration phase are closed. If one or more of your courses is closed, please submit any course alternates as required for registration that were previously approved by your academic advisor.

Additional Registration Instructions

More detailed instructions for registering online are also available.

Seminar Registration

Seminars are normally limited to 15 students. Instructors approve all enrollments in seminars by initialing the registration form. If the course instructor is not on campus this semester, please secure the signature from the area convener.

Special Note Regarding Registration for Students not in Course Work

Caspersen School regulations require all degree seeking students to maintain continuous enrollment in their programs. As a result, students not registered for course work must be either 1) registered for maintaining matriculation, 2) registered for dissertation research, or 3) on an approved leave of absence. Students not registered for course work or on an approved leave of absence by the first day of classes will be automatically registered for the appropriate maintaining matriculation course. The appropriate tuition charges and late registration fee will apply. Contact the Office of the Registrar at 973-408-3025 for additional information.

Special Note regarding registration for maintaining matriculation, dissertation research, and tutorials:

*The signature of your Academic Advisor is now required to register for Maintaining Matriculation and Dissertation Research.*

Maintaining Matriculation

To assist students in the registration process for maintaining matriculation, we have made the following changes to the process:

  1. All statuses are now grouped on the course list by the progress in your program. For example, if you are a master of arts student preparing languages, all statuses that apply to this stage of your program would be grouped together.
  2. A description of each maintaining matriculation status will appear on the course list. Students can use this information to assist them in the registration process.
  3. Additional statuses have been created to eliminate the need for students to repeat the same status multiple times.
  4. A website listing instructions on the registration for maintaining matriculation statuses is available here.

Dissertation Research

Our office has also made a change to the course number for dissertation research and tutorials. All dissertation research courses have been changed for Ph.D students according to the following: Old designation, ENGLG 999 or BIBST 999, etc. These designations belonging to all MA/PhD departments are now DISSG 998 and DISSG 999. (All MA, PhD students* have to complete two course sections for dissertation research). *Students in Modern History and Literature complete only one section of dissertation research, (DISSG 998).
