Lexis-Nexis Academic Database Tipsheet

LEXIS-NEXIS provides key word search access to articles from thousands of newspapers and periodicals and many other types of documents. Its main areas of strength are worldwide news, legal and business information. Sources are divided into categories:  General, News Legal, Business and People. Use of drop down menus allows many searching and sorting options.

Searching:

From the default search page:

  • do a simple search: easy search screen 
  • change the date range:date
  • Opt for an advanced or Power Search: easy power 
  • Search in specific areas -  News/Legal/Business or People: tipsheet1 

Sorting and saving options:

  • Sort by Relevance/Publication Date/Chronological.
  • Search within your results list.
  • Edit your current search.
  • View results by Multiple Groups (e.g. newspapers/trade journals, etc), by subject and more.

  • Check boxes next to items you want to save:results icons
  • Print, email, download or export bibliographic references with these icons: email etc icons.

Power Search:

  • Lets you select a specific source, or a type of source to search

  • Select a specific section of the newspaper/journal to search by clicking on  show 
  • And dropdown the section textmenu to reveal many options:lexis-power
  • You can also opt for a date range:

News searching:

  • Use lexis-industry-show to focus your search to an industry, subject and/or region:

  • Don't forget the date option in News. The default search period is only 3 months!

 Help:

  • Click on how do i for database help.

Saving, emailing, printing and exporting citations:

  • Click boxes next to articles to save articles to a folder to view later. Or save, print, email or export citations for individual articles.
  • Mouse over icons on right hand side of the results page to save, print, email, export citations.
