All students  with a Drew login have a drive K: dedicated to coursework. The contents of the drive vary according to the courses for which the user is registered.

Many faculty use Drew's Learning Management System,  Moodle to distribute documents they want to share with the class, including articles, syllabi, and other useful documents and information. Faculty who are not using Moodle may  use the K: drive.  Still other faculty may be using the  ATTIC system.  Professors will always let you know which system to use when sharing documents for their classes. Note: If you are not connected to the network, the K drive will not be displayed under My Computer. The K: drive is also accessible through any internet browser by using DocXchanger: docx.drew.edu.

Overview of the K: drive

Who has access to the  K: drive?

  • Access to these directories is based upon registration data for course enrollment and instruction. Student and faculty access is updated every 24 hours based on current registration data.
  • Additional users for an individual course can be granted access by the faculty member teaching the course using Trustee Rights.

How do I access the K: drive?

  1. From on campus on a computer connected to Drew's network, double click on My Computer ( Windows XP) or Computer ( Vista). One of the drives listed will say [Semester Abbreviation] on 'Causeway_p\Courses' (K:). For example, for Fall 2009, the drive will be labeled Fa2009 on ' Causeway_p\Courses'(K:).

   2.  Double click on that drive

3. In the next window, there will be folders for each of the courses in which you are currently enrolled.

   4.  Double click on the folder to access the course folders.

Folders on the K: drive

  • All course folders on the K: drive are created with five default subfiles: Archive, Reserve, WWW, From Faculty, To Faculty. Students have access to all five default folders except Archive. When students click on Archive they will see nothing in the folder because this folder is only accessible for Faculty.

  • The Reserve folder is the electronic equivalent of putting readings on reserve in the library. Faculty can place articles or images that have been scanned in this folder for students to read.
  • The WWW folder is where all files, images and anything else pertaining to the course web page are stored. Once there is an index.htm file in the WWW folder, the course web page are displayed at courses.drew.edu/course department-course number-course section. For example: http://courses.drew.edu/thea-26-001 will open the course page for Theatre 26. Going to http://courses.drew.edu will display a list of all existing course web pages.
  • The From Faculty

k

folder is where a faculty member will put files for specific students. Each student registered for the class will have a folder within the From Faculty folder identified by that student's user name.

  • The To Faculty

k 2

folder allows students to submit documents to the professor of the course. Once a file has been put in the To Faculty folder, students may no longer access it unless the professor returns it. See the instructions below to learn how to put a file in the To Faculty folder.  Once the file is submitted, it is date and time stamped.

Using the K: drive

Submitting  Documents in the "To Faculty" folder:

  • Double click on a folder to view its contents to make sure you are submitting the your documents to the correct area.
  • To submit a file to your professor using the To Faculty folder:
    • Save the file to your computer's hard drive or to your F: drive.
    • Go to My Computer and browse to where the file is saved.
    • Click once on the file, go to Edit > Copy or right click on the file and choose Copy.
    • Navigate to the Course folder on the K drive.
    • Double click on the To Faculty folder, double click on  the folder with your username.
    • Right-click anywhere in the white space inside the folder with your username > Paste or right click and choose Paste.

Note: Once you paste the file, you can not get it back, delete it, or make any changes to the file. This is the electronic equivalent to sliding a paper under a professor's office door, so please make sure the paper is ready before you copy it to the K: drive "To Faculty" folder.

Reserve Folder:

If your professor has put a reserve reading on the K: drive, double click on the Reserve folder and double click on the file to view it. Files may require the Adobe Acrobat reader which is installed on all Drew computers. However, if you do not have it and are logged into the network, it can be installed from the Application Explorer.
