FAQs
Is DONUT Required?
Yes. Completion of DONUT is required in order to earn Common Hour credits.
How do I complete the DONUT requirements?
Students have two options for completeing DONUT requirements for the Common Hour. The first option allows students to complete Self-Paced DONUT training online by registering for DNUT 1 section 001 when they register for courses. All that is required for Self-Paced study is for students to learn material in the online units listed above take the assessments on Moodle.
The second option is for students who prefer an Instructor-Paced class with lectures and demonstrations. This option allows students to sign up for DONUT workshops by registering for DNUT 1 and then choosing ANY OTHER SECTION (002-008) that fits with the rest of their course schedule.
You do NOT have to take more than one section of DONUT.
Where are the materials for Self-paced learning? How do I know which materials I should be looking at?
Materials for self-paced learning can be found by clicking on the links at the top of this page for Unit 1, Unit 2, and Unit 3.
You can tell which online materials you are supposed to study because the DONUT logo (pictured in the upper, right-hand corner) is on each page. You are ONLY responsible for materials that have the DONUT logo. Some DONUT materials will have hyperlinks to pages that do not have the logo - those pages are there for your general information, but you will not be tested on them.
What kind of information is covered in DONUT?
Self-paced and Instructor-paced materials address such technology related issues as:
- What are the K: , F:, and U: drives? What are they used for? How do students access them?
- How to prevent physical damage to new laptops, and how to prevent virus and spyware damage.
- How to use Moodle for grades, assignments submissions, and course discussion.
- What qualifies as a breach of the Drew Network User Agreement and what are the consequences for infractions?
- What is "netiquette" and why does it matter to members of the Drew community?
- Where to go for help with different kinds of computer problems.
Is DONUT graded?
Yes, each student receives a pass/fail grade. Students will have to pass 3 different assessments that test their knowledge of the Drew network, use of specific software programs related to course work, laptop maintenance, and understanding the Network User Agreement. Students may take the assessments as many times as they like; 90% or higher constitutes a passing grade.
Who teaches the Instructor-paced workshops?
Student Technology Education Lab employees teach the workshops.
How much class time is required for the Instructor-Paced workshop sections?
DONUT workshops consist of three, one-hour training sessions. Students will attend DONUT workshops once a week for the first three weeks of thier first semester at Drew. These workshops are scheduled at seven different times during the week to insure that there are workshops that will accommodatedifferent student schedules. Students in Instructor-Paced workshops may also use the Self-Paced documentation to help them learn the necessary material to pass assessments outside of workshop time. Tests for the instructor-paced sessions will be provided on Moodle, just as with the self-paced sessions.
What if none of the workshops fit my schedule, but I still want to take the Instructor-Paced class?
Contact the STEL. Instructors may be able to add a section if there is enough demand for an additional Instructor-Paced workshop.
