Topics | Technology enabled assignments
As many of the incoming students have some technology skills, the FYS technology training workshops focus on the changes in the students' technology environment.
- Technology community (network)
- Technology in a professional/ academic environment
As part of a network of over 3000 computers, students are introduced to the concepts of network storage, connecting to the network and enterprise applications. They are also introduced to some of the formal IT resources available to them, such as a helpdesk, and user-initiated training.
There are 3 weekly workshops for First Year Seminar students which take place during September. To help students feel more comfortable in the technology workshops, students will take an online assessment. The online assessment will allow students to register for one of two levels of workshops: Entry level and Experienced level. The two levels will follow the same outline; the Experienced level workshop will cover the material in more depth. Both levels will cover the topics essential to students' successful use of the computing environment.
Students can take the online assessment anytime. After completing the assessment, they will register for the technology workshop level indicated, at the same time they register for other courses.
Your seminar will not be together during the technology training. As such, attendance reports are sent to you each week. If a student misses a workshop, please have them contact the Training Cooridnator in the STEL. Make-up workshops begin in mid-September. Please visit our training calendar for dates and times.

Using technology as a tool in classroom assignments
Many of the projects you and your seminar undertake can incorporate elements of technology. Several professors currently use web pages or Blackboard for course announcements and publication of the syllabus.
In the past, faculty have used:
- Web pages to publish annotated bibliographies and projects
- Discussion boards
- Professor posts a question - all students respond no later than 1 hour before the next class
- Professor posts a question - students are assigned each week as "moderators" who are responsible for responding to posts
- Track changes to review and comment on student papers.
Other faculty have used web casts to "bring in" guest lecturers and the tracking changes feature in Word for feedback on student assignments.
Please contact the STEL for ideas about using an element of technology in the classroom, or for a demonstration or documentation for your students. If you'd like to learn about any of the technologies, please contact the Faculty Lab (in BC11, at x 3160 or gbartle@drew.edu).
