About Aid for International Students
Graduate and Theological Schools
Drew offers a limited program of financial assistance, consisting of merit-based aid for international students applying for first-year admission. Admitted international students will be considered for merit-based scholarships. These awards are offered in various increments and are based on strength of candidacy. Applicants must demonstrate their ability to pay for costs in excess of their merit scholarship. Remember: Financial assistance is limited for international students and will not cover the entire cost of attendance at Drew.
College of Liberal Arts
Students seeking financial assistance must complete the International Student Financial Statement and return the form, together with their application for admission, by February 15. All financial aid grants are renewable for three additional years (for a total of four years) provided the student maintains full-time enrollment and the minimum GPA requirement stipulated in the award letter.
An international applicant who is academically qualified for admissions but whose financial need cannot be met in full by Drew (as determined by Drew's Office of Financial Assistance using the information on the International Student Financial Statement), will be denied admission. Remember: Financial assistance is limited for international students and will cover very little, if any, of the cost of attendance at Drew.
Contacting the Office
International students have additional needs and concerns, and so we strongly request that you contact us via phone or e-mail at:
Applying for Aid
Now that you know what you need as an international student, your next step is to learn more about what we offer for our different colleges here at Drew.
Information for CLA Students
The College of Liberal Arts is committed to helping make a Drew education accessible to students needing assistance and to recognizing excellence.
For this reason, the college offers a comprehensive program of need-based and merit-based financial assistance. Through this program, the college has been able to attract talented students from diverse backgrounds.
A typical financial assistance award from Drew consists of grants, part-time work opportunities, and low-interest loans. During 2008-2009, undergraduate students at Drew received over $26 million in total grant assistance:
- Almost $23 million from the university's own resources
- $3.5 million from federal and state agencies
- $0.8 million from outside sources
The average College student assistance package was $28,210, of which $18,011 was in grants and the remainder in loans and employment. Of the 402 first-year students who enrolled in the Fall of 2008, over 95% received some form of financial assistance.
Tuition Facts
At Drew, we know that families are concerned about the cost of college. That's why we provided nearly $23 million in student assistance last year, rewarding academic merit and offsetting financial need. In fact, the "sticker price" of a Drew education is not the actual price paid by most students and families.
For students beginning their bachelor's degree in the fall of 2008, the average tuition cost after Drew assistance was $21,393.
That's a reduction of $14,517.
For those students who also qualified for federal and state grant assistance, the average tuition cost was $6,712.
That's a reduction of $29,198.
In addition to grant and scholarship programs, most students qualified for low interest student loans and student employment opportunities, further reducing their costs.

Information for Graduate Students
The intent of Drew University's financial assistance program is to provide assistance to eligible full and part-time students on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement.
Financial need is defined as the difference between the comprehensive cost of attending Drew and the student's ability to pay. Ability to pay is determined annually by using a nationally applied needs analysis system. Drew's comprehensive cost includes tuition, fees, room and board, textbooks, travel, and personal expenses.
Graduate students must fill out and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the federal student aid processor no later than April 1st.
A Drew Supplemental Form must also be completed and returned to the Office of Financial Assistance. The Committee on Financial Aid meets monthly beginning in mid-March to review completed applications for new students, and the FAFSA form and Drew Supplemental Form must have been filed before any aid can be awarded.
Financial aid is offered in a combination of grants (scholarships and other nonrepayable awards), loans (usually at lower than prevailing interest rates), and part-time employment (on and off campus).
Each financial aid package is tailored to meet the specific needs of the recipient. The grant portion of the package can range from 35 to 100 percent of tuition.
One-half of a student's annual grant award and loan amount is credited to the student's account each semester. Those with federal work/study jobs or other campus employment receive regular paychecks for time worked. Work/study is NOT credited to the student's account.
International students who qualify for financial aid will find resources limited. If a student is not an American citizen or an eligible non-citizen, he or she is not eligible to receive aid under any federal program.
Because of the stringent financial reporting prerequisite to the granting of a visa for prospective students and their families, students are required to submit financial documentation, such as sponsor support forms, bank statements, or certifications from other outside funding sources to certify all funds are available to cover the cost of attendance at Drew for one calendar year. Part of these funds can include Drew scholarship assistance and on-campus employment.
International students must file with the Office of Financial Aid's Foreign Student's Financial Aid Application and Declaration as well as the Drew Supplemental Form.

Information for Theological School Students
Drew offers a financial assistance program consisting of need-based and merit-based aid.
Merit scholarships are awarded by the Admissions Committee each March for fall enrollment and in December for spring enrollment. No separate application is required; all admitted applicants are automatically evaluated for a merit scholarship. It is important that applications are completed by March 1 or December 1, including the Federal Work Study and Federal Stafford Loan.
Need-based financial assistance is available to qualified applicants who have completed both the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and the Drew Theological School Supplemental form.
The Theological School Supplemental Form is mailed in late January or as soon as an application is received. The FAFSA form can be completed on the FAFSA website. When a student is admitted to the Theological School and we have received your financial aid forms, Drew will offer an award if need is demonstrated.
International students are not eligible to receive financial aid under any U.S. Federal program.
Cost of Attendance for the 2009/2010 academic year
- Based on 23 credits per year.
- First year and returning students enrolled in less than 11 credits are charged $681 per credit.
