Drew University Club Sports offer all students the opportunity to participate in competitive sports at a higher level. Drew University offers more than 9 competitive club sports, all of which are student managed. The student leaders provide a fun and competitive atmosphere allowing participants to continue playing the sports they love, meet new people and try new activities. The Cheerleading Club was created in 1988 and since has increased membership each year. The club currently has two teams: advanced and intermediate, allowing all an opportunity to be involved. The Cheerleading club competes all over the east coast and prides itself on being one of the top Cheer clubs in the state. Through hard work, this team continues to strive for the National Championship title. This club is a great way to make lifelong friends and stay in shape, while having the opportunity to be part of a competitive cheerleading team.
The Dance Club provides the opportunity for any student to dance and perform in a noncompetitive, relaxed environment and offer members the chance to perform for an audience. The Dance Club also brings in guest dance instructors (open to the Drew community) several times a year.
The Dance Team can be seen at all home men & women's basketball games, various University and alumni events, as well as other functions around the Drew University campus. Now, with 26 members, the team has aspirations of bringing home the National competitions.
Drew University Marksmanship Unit (D.U.M.U) provides a social context for field sports enthusiasts to discuss shooting sports, participate in both practice sessions and competitive events, and to educate the student populationat large about firearm safety. Their aim is to foster a better understanding of the sports of archery and riflery while promoting safety,
Kum Do, or the Way of the Sword, is the Korean art of sword fencing practiced centuries ago during the Shilla Dynasty. It is closely related to Japanese Kendo and many historians believe they have a common origin. Kumdo emphasizes the development of concentration, strength, and self-control. All training is done with bamboo practice swords (Juk Do) and when players spar, armor (Hogu) is worn to protect the head, wrists, and torso, targets in Kum Do.
The Men’s Rugby club was founded at Drew University in 1971. The team plays a full schedule of intercollegiate competition as a member of the USA Rugby Union, traveling to matches & tournaments all over the Atlantic Seaboard. The club offers prospective members an outlet for tough physical play on the field and social camaraderie off the field. The rugby club helps to instill a passion for the game and helps prepare its members for life after college by allowing players to practice teamwork, time management, leadership, and physical and mental toughness. The club welcomes both experienced and inexperienced players to join the team.
The Drew Step Team originated in the fall of 2004 with 10 energetic young women who choreograph and perform fast-paced routines which incorporate rhythmic stomps, hand claps and call-and-response-style. Their steps are executed with drill team precision and usually performed without musical instruments. They are available to perform during halftime of all athletic games, for churches, youth groups, schools/colleges and also special invitational performances.
The Drew Ultimate Frisbee club (aka Drew Blood) was founded in the late eighties. The clubs first bid to nationals came in 1996, followed by appearances in four of the next five years. Club ultimate offers students a chance to play one of the fastest growing sports in the world. If you enjoy fast-paced, constant action that combines elements of soccer, football, and basketball; ultimate might be the sport for you. The club fields two competitive teams that participate in UPA intercollegiate and club action by traveling around the Mid Atlantic to sanctioned tournaments. Although the teams are generally set by mid-fall, all male students are welcome to attend practice. Be prepared and ready to compete!
The Women's Rugby Club has been successful throughout its 15 year existence. The club competes in intercollegiate matches as a member of the USA Rugby Union. The only requirement for membership is a tough spirit. In 2007 and 2008 the club competed in the Metropolitan NY Playoff and lost close games with Vassar College and Stonybrook, respectively. The coaches and members will teach new members everything they need to know about the fun and exciting sport.
