Academic Program May 25 - June 19, 2009
Students will study Modern Standard Arabic at the DMG Language Center in Rabat, Morocco with the center's faculty for four hours per day - from 9:00 -11:00 a.m. and from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.. All levels are welcome, including those students with no prior knowledge of the language. Concurrently, the Director of the program will teach a Culture & Society in Morocco course in English which will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. and will include three weekend train excursions to different Moroccan cities. The first will be to Fez, the historical cultural capital of Morocco with the most extant intact old city in the Arab world. The students will take a guided tour of the old city, see the oldest university in the country, dating back to the mid ninth century, and learn about the lasting effect of Andalusian culture on the city. The second will be to Marrakesh, which is home to Jama’ al-Fna, a UNESCO heritage site. Here students will learn about the history of Jama’ al-Fna, and study the effects of tourism on what is now the most popular city in Morocco. The third will be to Tangier, where students will learn about the literary culture of the city’s international zone period, a time in which Tangier hosted some of the U.S.’s most famous authors, including Tennessee Willams, Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, Paul Bowles, Allen Ginsberg, and Truman Capote. Course Selection Credits earned will apply towards a Drew degree and can be used for the language in context requirement. All students take a total of 8 credit-hours: the Arabic Culture course (ME 10/Selected Topics) in English and the appropriate Arabic language course. Language Course: Every student will register for one of the language classes at the appropriate level. Culture Course: The following 4-credit course in culture will consist of lectures and experiential learning, on-site visits to selected cities and places of interest. All students must register for this class which is conducted in English.| ME 34 | Selected Topics in Middle East Studies |

Program Cost The fee for the 2009 Summer program has been set at $4,100. - 8 credits of tuition
- airport pick-up upon arrival
- homestays, primarily with DMG instructors
- breakfasts and dinners with host families
- local transportation
- roundtrip airfare from New York City
Lunches, incidentals and personal expenses are not included. Students will also be charged a $25 summer course registration fee. Eligibility A completed application including an unofficial transcript and a faculty recommendation is required.
