Academic Program
May 23 - June 20, 2009
Students will spend 4 weeks on an archaeological excavation, taking a 4 credit Classics Department course in archaeological field research and the material culture of the local region of Italy in antiquity, including a few field trips to local sites and museums. The excavation will take place 13 km outside the Italian city of Todi, approximately 1 1/2 hours north of Rome in the Tiber River Valley. The site itself is located just outside the small town of Massa Martana to the east of Todi, in a field beside the 8th-9th century church of S. Maria in Pantano.
Students will live in apartments in the nearby town of Massa Martana, equipped with modern amenities. Most meals will be eaten together there and students will share some household chores.
