          FAQ's- Frequently Asked Housing Questions

Room Assignment and Roommate

Housing assignments and roommate pairings for students new to Drew University are based on information students provide on the Housing Application. First-year students are assigned to Brown, Tolley, Holloway, or Welch Halls. Roommates are encouraged to contact each other prior to coming to Drew to make plans for the use of the room and to determine who will bring such large items such as a stereo, television, or refrigerator.

Returning students have the opportunity to select the hall, room and roommate for the next academic year through a room selection process that occurs in the spring semester. The order of room selection is based on the year of the student and a randomly generated lottery number distributed to all students prior to room selection.

Room Furnishings

A bed frame, mattress, dresser, desk, desk chair, and a hanging space or wardrobe are provided in each room. Mattresses are extra-long, measuring 35" x 80". Every room has three wastebaskets: one each for trash, aluminum and glass, and paper recycling.

Students may decorate their rooms to reflect their interests and make them personally appealing. All windows have shades or minibinds; however, curtains are permitted. In many residence halls, cork strips are available in each room for posters. Tape and fun tac may also be used to put up wall hangings.

Bathrooms

Students are encouraged to bring shower caddies for transporting towels and toiletries. Committed to minimum paper waste, the University does not provide paper towels in residence hall bathrooms. Residents of Riker, the Suites, and Eberhardt are responsible for cleaning their own bathrooms; the University provides cleaning supplies and toilet paper.

Refrigerators

Small refrigerators (4 ½ cubic feet or less with starting current under 7 amps) are permitted in student rooms. Students may bring their own refrigerators or rent them through the Residence Life Office, which will supply pertinent information at the beginning of the fall semester.

Hook-Ups

Student rooms have private telephones, cable TV access, and connections to the campus-wide information system and Internet.

Laundry Equipment

Every residence hall and theme house is equipped with washer and dryer.

Smoking is not permitted in any of the residence halls.

Housing Commitment Agreement

Based on SGA recommendation, the Housing Commitment Agreement was created to help maintain the fairness of the Lottery/Room Selection process. After you have selected a room during room selection you must sign the Housing Commitment Agreement. Basically, the Agreement acknowledges a student's obligation to occupy his/her selected housing choice for the following academic year. In other words, if a student selects Baldwin, Room 102 as their housing pick, they must sign the Housing Commitment Agreement stating they will live in that room in the fall. Failure to honor the Housing Commitment Agreement results in a fine of one-fifth the semester cost of the selected room. If you discover that you will not be able to occupy your selected room for the following academic year, you must cancel housing, in writing, with the Housing Office.

A student who selects a room in one of the Suites (Foster, Hurst or McClintock), or McLendon Hall on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th floor will be charged one-fifth of the semester cost of the selected room if he/she cancels their housing for the Fall semester at any time after making this selection, and before August 31, 2009. Also, he/she will be assessed one-fifth of the semester cost for changing to another room outside of the area listed above, after Room Selection and prior to the first day of fall semester classes.

A student selecting a room other than in the Suites or, McLendon 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th floors must cancel housing with the Housing Office, in writing, before June 1, 2009, to avoid a fine.
