The Baldridge Reading and Study Strategy Program

As a service to our students, Counseling and Psychological Services arranges a special program in the Fall and again in the Spring to improve reading and learning skills in academic subjects.

The program includes a broad range of techniques designed to increase reading speed, improve comprehension, deepen concentration and strengthen recall. The program also includes techniques for:

  • Completing research papers
  • Developing practical strategies for overcoming procrastination
  • Taking more organized lecture note
  • Budgeting time more wisely
  • Preparing more thoroughly for test and examinations

The program is conducted by an instructor from Baldridge Reading, an organization of reading specialists with more than twenty-five years of experience in teaching on college campuses across the country. Ten classes are scheduled to meet five days per week for two weeks in September.

Also included is a refresher course which is scheduled in the beginning of November for five days. Scheduling is flexible to accommodate individual academic schedules. A five-day course is also offered in the Spring. Students use their own textbooks and leisure reading during insertion, and can usually see immediate results in their own studies.

There are no specific out-out-class assignments: the skills learned in the program are automatically strengthened and refined when students use them while studying for their regular course.

The fee is $117.00. All incoming freshman and returning sophomores are sent an information packet along with a registration form in the summer.
