The Good Line: Crisis Intervention - Ext. 4663
A helpline is operated (5 pm to 9 am, Monday - Friday) by a group of student volunteers called PAR (Peer Assistance and Referral)
About the PAR program:
Peer Assistance and Referral (PAR) provides an additional service to the students of Drew University. PAR is a student run organization that operates the Good Line, an after hours phone service. The Good line operates from 5pm to 9pm every day. The line provides assistance, information and referral for students in crisis or having any type of emotional difficulty. The students that operate the phone line are trained to handle a range of calls in a calm, caring and professional manner. However, they are not counselors; therefore their main role is to provide support, information and referral. Their main objective is to act in the role of facilitator by assisting the caller in finding the specific help they need. The PAR group is supervised by a counselor from Drew's James A. McClintock Center for Counseling and Psychological Services.
Who can call the Good Line? Any Drew student who is experienceing emotional difficulty or who would like more information for themselves or a friend about certain psychological issues. Examples of the types of calls that are received on the PAR line would be; relationship issues, problems with roommates, problems with families, school problems, and coping with stress. The Good Line is an excellent resource for obtaining information and referrals to deal with any individual problem more specifically. All calls are strictly confidential.
Would you like to be a member of PAR? The PAR group is always looking for Interested students to be part of their organization. In order to apply for membership first decide if you are a good listener? Ask yourself the following: "Am I calm and patient? Do I like helping people? Am I willing to give up approximately three nights a month one or two of which may be a weekend night to cover the phone line and one hour a week to attend mandatory supervision and training sessions? If you feel that your answers are positive, then why not consider applying for membership. This is one campus organization that can provide numerous opportunities including helpful training in dealing with others, helping fellow peers, and being part of a fun group of caring individuals.
